im not looking for pcp/co2 rifles because in total all the necessary accessories; tanks, pumps, etc.. is over a grand. Only spring loaders, looking to hunt small to medium game with this rifle. Must also have long range power and accuracy. Budget is under $400, although the cheaper the better. So far, after all the reading I've done, the Walther Talon Magnum seems like the most powerful one.

i love my walther talon 22.cal,its so accurate, even with cheap cphp 14.5 gr 22.cal.trigger is smooth,my other magnum air rifle is a vortek tuned ruger air magnum,it to is powerful and accurate, the talon winning out in both category's..my talon from walther was purchased new at a.g.d my r.a.m was a refurbished from a/d.both look a like, yet the talon is lighter,i originally purchased the 25,cal falcon hunter, nice also, but the 22cal had better range.and is much cheaper to shoot.and had all the new upgrades,s.a.s trigger a/p.n/s its such a smooth rifle to shoot,i shot a 22cal hollow point crosman 14.5 gr pellet at a metal 50gal trash drum at the automotive shop i work at at 15feet went inside the drum and threw the trash and dented the other side, deeply, almost threw,3 shots at 3 different spots 6 inches apart and same results,so yeah;i'd say its got some power.and mine cost 209.00 with free shipping, put a 49.95 n/c star 3x9x50mm scope on it and a 1 piece mount,14.99,all items were free shipping.also purchased a sling that slips on for carrying .6.99 free shipping,so for 280.00+/- i got one of the most powerful spring air rifles on the planet, only one's i think are even close stock,is the tf jett, then the tf87 ,there's more expensive air rifles that are close like rws 460,rws 350, webley patriot .but one thing ;you want a air rifle that stays in the high 900's and low 1000.for longer range, but accuracy and shot placement are more important than fpe and fps.as for range for hunting i would not risk shooting an animal pass 50 yards with the most powerful spring air gun, even 50yards is really pushing it.but it also depends on what your shooting pellet gr wise,i see some people hunting at usually 40yards or less all the time.but really for longer range hunting, use a pcp or firearm, rifle.my rule.if i can set up a target at 60 yards, life size, and i can place 3/3 shots in the pupil of the eye.then yes i,ll drop a coon or rabbit or opossum, or nutter at 50yards,]but i don't hunt anymore.good luck with your air gun choice, and i am sure there are many other air rifle's out there i missed, like crosman and Benjamin, like the xl,s and i know others will let you know from there experience ,that do actually hunt, like shadow.DmikeM,and many, many others, good luck

thanks for the reply. so far i am pretty much sold on the walther. i live in california, and small to medium game can only be taken with either a shotgun or air rifle, .22lrs are illegal to hunt with in california. hence, this is the only reason why i am seeking an air rifle, if not, my .22lr would be my go to gun for small to medium game. shotguns are to loud, which i am afraid is going to spook the *(&^ out of anything around me.

I know that in air rifles it seems like power is everything but don't let that fps number completely hi-jack your decision. There are plenty of powerful, not so expensive rifles out there and there are also some very accurate ones too. Sometimes the two categories don't meet. I just finished posting a reply in an adjacent thread about the Cometa Fusion, which is about as good as you'll get, along with its brother the Fenix. I have both and although the Fusion is unfired, I can vouch for the Fenix. In my stable it is the most accurate air rifle I have ever fired. I have Techforce 89, Webley Dominator and Patriot (English and Turkish models .25), BSA's, Cometa's, Gamo's,, I can't remember them all by models but NONE to date is more accurate than the Cometa Fenix .177. It's capable of exceeding that 1000fps, although that changes with the pellets you choose to use. I use the JSB Exact 8.44gr, and it takes some beating. I have a Hawke 3-9x40 scope on it. I just think I have found a perfect combination of rifle/pellet/scope in this unit. You have to remember that you might get a great rifle and have it turn to muck with a poor pellet or scope choice, so don't forget the total package...

Hi thisgsx and welcome to the GTA!!
Don't hesitate to try a walther talon or hunter, they are very accurate considering that they are one of the most powerful springers, and not only shoot well but seem to be pretty much an all around great gun with less trouble than i've had with other magnum springers, even the german ones. J

In terms of production rifles the walther talon and hunter are
Your best bet. If you can find an old webley patriot or beeman kodiak those guns are power houses as well. It's actually the same gun just under different names. They are not made anymore but according to
Tom Gaylord they were the most powerful spring guns of the time.

Nothing wrong with the talon, but if your gonna hunt inside 50 yrds, there is nothing wrong with a walmart Beeman RS2 either!
At a little over 100.00 you get a very good adjustable trigger + the rifle comes with 2 barrels & is capable of excellent accuracy after the use of some loctite.
If max power is what your after, airgun depot has the RWS 350 pro compact at the top of your price range. I have one & even though it is a little heavy, they are very powerful & super accurate right out of the box.

Bob P,
After seeing one of those RWS350's in a nearby gunshop, I wanted to get one, but while I was making up my mind, I did some reading on this fellow, and was quite astonished at just how many owners have said one thing in common about it. They love to kill scopes, good scopes, cheapo's, whatever. I know I run the risk of getting a right ear bashing here but I even know a couple of guys who have said the same thing. Lovely rifle, don't get me wrong but I am wondering just how true it is...
Actually, I didn't read the topic of this thread properly. I didn't see he was after a larger calibre... I also have two Webley Patriots .25's, one Turk and the other an English version. Both are immensely powerful but the English model is real *ss kicker. If you can get ahold a one of these, it may be a worthwhile choice too...

thisgsx: On paper, this is all well and fine. But since you're talking about taking it hunting, you should realize just how muzzle heavy these magnum springers are. If you can scope it and hold one up and hold it steady for more than 5 seconds, I would be quite impressed.
If you rest it, then accuracy can be impacted, because they are usually hold sensitive.
You should consider an RWS 48. It's not THE most powerful, but it is magnum class and since it is a side lever cocking arm, the center of mass will be further back.
Find a used one of those, and you'll be golden. There was one in .22 for sale in our Classifieds section, you might take a good look and see if it is still there.

Like you said, a bad scope can certainly wreck a other wise great rifle. But all mag springers are capable of scope killing! My 350 has wore the scope that came with it (RWS 3-9x40) for over 1000 shots. I swapped the scope out for a lighter more compact center point 3-9x32AO to lower the over all weight of the rifle & it to has been fine after some 500rnds now.
FWIW,I use the accushot medium mount & I didnt remove the stop screw from my rifle! instead, I used loctite to permantly set it. The accushots rear stop pin will mount in the receiver while the back of mount fits tightly to the rifles stop screw. Its worked very well for me so far.

Actually, there have been some VERY good answers in here. Some points I too overlooked, like the weight of the setup as mentioned by Pelletnutz - VERY good point indeed. I would hate to lug around either or my two Patriots for an hour, let alone all day, and yes, as Smaug says, these cannons can be hold sensitive (like many airguns regardless). There's always a trade-off and the 'power vs usability' one is possibly the worst to overcome. The thought of that extra velocity (and therefore power) can kind of upset the old equilibrium a bit. I think that's what I was trying to get at in my first post further back up the thread. What we don't think of is usually with more power comes more weight which is needed to support larger springs, cylinder and pistons etc. Actually, three of my rifles fall into that category, real heavyweights,, all Webley's too...
1). Webley Patriot .25 English
2). Webley Patriot .25 Turkish
3). Webley Dominator .177
all scoped and all around the 10lb mark. They are all supposedly capable of well over the 20ft-lb at the muzzle but you don't get that for free...

get Any of those big Nitro Pistons
Heavy ?....yeah, but not that big of a deal, today I was hunting with my 707 Ultra, way heavyer than my NP XL and i carryed up and down the mountains with no problems
Hold sensitive ?....yeah, but if you put your time in they'll rewvard you with a real great accurate cannon
I'm thinking to get the Walther .25 nitro piston,...as soon as i get somme extra cash

Pelletnuz, I agree with what you've said on this a 14 to 16ftlb gun 7.5 to 8lbs is a good field gun and has more power than most people need! you can cleanly take small game out to 100yds with a gun in this power range with proper shot placement, and a Cometa 400 type gun is perfect for this, I have a Fenix 400 compact in .22cal thats a sweet gun and fits right in the guide lines!

My Falcon Hunter is shooting 21g Kodiaks at 810 fps and 16g Predators at 880 fps; and it's VERY accurate; 14.3 g CPHPS's fly at 980 fps.
It's a refurb and I've only sent 100 pellets through her so these numbers will probably calm down slightly. But I've been very impressed so far.

Hi Folk forgive the intrusion, the old calibre debate will never end.I shoot in the UK where our guns unless on a ticket are restricted to 12 fpe.I can no longer shoot out much further than 50 yards but have seen .177 pellets pass clean through rabbits heads at 120 yards, try it for yourselves hang road kill on a fence pace out the distance and place a shot if you can.seen the same done with .22,but never .25.However at 50 yards a .25 will knock down faster harder and more certainly than any of the others. Can recommend a BSA SuperStar in .25 gas rammed, the only real problem is the sound pellet sounds bit like a train.plenty of Patriots for sale this side of the pond you just need to find a friendly dealer this side to do the paper work and post to you. Never steal, never lie, tell it straight until you die.

We've got a hickory tree between our driveway and the neighbors. The squirrels have been dropping chewed shells all over the cars and dropping the occasional whole nut on them as well. As this gets pretty old after a while, I decided to put some quality time into thinning the herd. I dropped 6 of them in about 10 minutes, at a range of 35-45 yards. At the time, my neighbor and his wife were outside in their driveway battening down the hatches for the Armageddon coming our way(NJ). my neighbor saw me standing on my deck and asked if I had an extra tarp. I put the gun down, and fetched him the tarp he had requested. As he was leaving, he noticed the pile of nutters and asked " How did you get those, trap them?" I picked up my XL with the .25 barrel on it. Enough said.

I have a walther falcon hunter in .25 and it is a powerhouse. Even though you.said no pcp my recomendation would still be a disco. The whole setup (gun and pump) can be had for under $400.00 and accuracy will be easier to find.

Have you considered the Benjamin Trail XL 725? You an buy the barrel assembly from Crosman and convert it to .22. I think it should be in the same power range as the Walther Talon/Falcon Hunter. The main reason I have not bought a .25 springer is the cost and availability of ammo. I only shoot paper, so it's a waste of .25 pellets, and .22 pellets are available locally.

Hi Folk forgive the intrusion, the old calibre debate will never end.
That's about the truest thing ever said (by many people) about airguns. I can remember when I was 14yrs old in approx 1970 and bought my first air rifle, it was a "Chinese Air Rifle" (that's all that was stamped on the cylinder) and was .177 and capable of about 650fps, cost about $25. A pal of mine at the time had a BSA Meteor (started my love affair with them which has still lasted up to now), his was a .22. These two rifles shared about the same amount of muzzle energy. When we went out shooting after school for the first time, I noticed that mine was always quicker to the target, an old tin roofed shed over in a back field maybe 50 - 60 yards away. I scoffed at his lack of velocity and teased hime for a while. BSA's were meant to the thee air rifle to have back then... It was true, mine WAS much faster, but, his always made a lot louder noise when it finally hit and of course he exclaimed that his had more power in the larger pellet. This started my interest in ballistics. A couple of years later I eventually bought a BSA Meteor but still in .177 and I fell in love with that rifle but it wasn't anymore powerful than my older Chinese job, probably about the same velocity. The old tin shed used to be a kind of velocity test for me and any of my mates with air rifles. We'd always try to out gun each other over the years... I used to love .177,, still do, but nowadys air rifles are much more powerful and ammo is much much better quality, so in many cases, a .22 and a .25 can certainly be better choices. You still have to remember a few facts though. Within a given energy limit (remember, we're talking spring airgun here), a .177 is always going to have a flatter trajectory, but "MAY" shed energy faster with "SOME" average pellets. Pellets like the .177 H&N Baracuda, although heavier, can hold energy even better than many .22's can, even firing the equivalent .22 pellet because they have very high BC's and in themselves, become a sort of go-between from .177 and .22. You just have to be careful to use the Bara in the correct .177 springer though. They need a powerful .177 rifle to exploit their great characteristics.
I really think pellet choice is paramount in bringing out the true potential in long range airgunning especially in .177 as so many different sizes and shapes are available.. I always make sure I have plenty to choose from in ALL three calibres, including lightweight cheapo's to expensive heavyweights like Bara's and JSB Exacts Kings etc. I have a bucket load of pellets sitting here and I generally think of what kind of shooting the rifle will do before choosing the pellet. The first pellet choice does not always work and it may need some testing but eventually you get a good compromise, and 9 times out of 10 it's the good pellets that seems to work best - I'm talking accuracy here, not velocity. Every now and then though, you get an oddball match between pellet and rifle, like my BSA Meteor Mk6, which went its best with the cheapest, lightest pellets I have. Hey, who's moaning...
I no longer consider one calibre to be superior to the others... Each pellet acts differently from all others, even within the same calibre...
