ND-3 Sub Zero Laser Designator

This afternoon I received the "Laser Genetics ND-3 Sub Zero laser Designator" that I ordered a few days ago from OpticsPlanet. I ordered the "Sub Zero" model of this unit which is specifically designed to operate in freezing temperatures. There is another model, the standard ND-3 model that is not meant to be used in cold temperatures. This is just an initial review as I still have more testing to do with the unit but I'll report on my initial impressions after playing with the unit in the dark of my back yard.
The unit arrived very nicely packaged and in great shape. The laser unit and the accessories come in a very nice padded case with a nice zipper that securely closes the case and with cut-outs inside the box for each of the accessories.
The laser designator itself is slightly larger than a "mini mag light" flashlight and it appears to be of very good quality and build. It uses one CR 123A Lithium battery which is included and it comes with a 1 inch scope mount with windage and elevation adjustment, spotting scope and binocular mounts, a weaver mount, cleaning kit and a very nice momentary pressure switch.
I used the scope mount to mount the unit to my .22 Discovery but since all my scopes are 1 inch tube diameters I could actually mount it on any rifle I want. The scope mount itself is nicely built, very sturdy, installs very easily and once installed is a rock solid platform. The windage and elevation adjustment knobs function very nicely and it only takes a few adjustments to quickly zero the laser beam with the crosshairs of your scope. You do this procedure with the beam adjusted to its' tightest (smallest diameter) beam and then you rotate the collimater so that the green laser light just fills your view through the scope.
Here's a few pics of the unit mounted on my Disco.. you can see the windage and elevation knobs as well as the beam width markings on the collimater on the front of the unit.....
Here are a couple of pics of the accessory mounts and pressure switch as well as the zippered, padded storage case..
The collimater on the unit functions very smoothly and accurately and allows you to very easily adjust the beam to whatever width/size you desire. The tighter the beam the brighter the target. If you should wish to "paint" your target a little brighter all you have to do is turn the dial narrowing the beam and the target gets brighter. I found however that once I adjusted the beam to just fill my scope that it threw all the illumination I needed, but you could make it tighter and brighter if you want to. The on/off switch at the back of the unit functions crisply with a nice audible "click"every time you push it. The momentary pressure switch functions just as nicely.
I found this to be a very nicely constructed and well built unit that worked well. Now it was time to take it out to the pitch black yard as see what kind of visibility the green laser would provide. Well, I can sum it up in 2 words..... very impressive !!
I sat down at my shooting bench and with the laser off I pointed my disco at my spinning metal targets 30 yards away and looked through the scope. As expected all I saw was... nothing... just a black void. Ok, time to turn the unit on.... clicked the switch to "on". I had already adjusted the laser to be dead center in the crosshairs (did that in the basement) so all I had to do was point the disco at the metal spinners and rotate the collimater ring to adjust the beam so it just filled up my scope. When I did this I immediately found my metal spinner targets in perfectly clear view,, clear enough that I could actually see the dents in the metal spinners from shooting at them with my condor. It was awesome. I got up from the bench and moved to the far end of my yard and again took a look through the scope,, distance was now 45 yards. The metal spinners were just as clear and bright as they were from the shooting bench at 30 yards,, I was really impressed. The scope on my disco does not have an illuminated reticle and yet I could still see my crosshairs as clear as day. If you used a scope with an illuminated reticle it would be incredible. My Condor has an "I/R" scope and that's where the ND-3 is destined to go so it'll be great.
I decided to test the unit at even further distances so I started sighting on tree limbs high up in the trees in my neighbors yards. Everything I sighted on through the scope was beautifully lit up and perfectly clear. Had there been a raccoon sitting in any of those trees they would've been an easy target.
I still have more testing to do, especially on live animals so I can evaluate whether or not the green light does or does not spook them, but so far I have to say that I am really impressed with the ND-3's performance. This thing is incredible.
I'll add to this review as I do more testing. My big question is whether it spooks game or not. I've read some reviews that says it does and some that say it doesn't.... time and testing will tell.
Ok that's it for now, I hope this review is of some use to GTA members who may be considering the purchase of such a unit.

How much it does or does not spook game is going to depend a lot on how much that particular animal has been spooked before. If an animal has been shined with lights and spooked he will get educated and wary. There is no way to know what a particular critter's life experiences have been so you really cant say that it does or doesn't spook game based on a few trials, if you know what I mean. Some may flee like they were on fire from the very sight of it, and others may act like they don't even notice. I've done a lot of coon hunting and night fishing and other night time activities and have seen the reaction and behaviour of all kinds of animals when they are hit by a beam of light. Nothing is 100%. Good luck with your experiments. It really is a cool piece of equipment and I would like to have one myself.
