Title: Hunters Supply Ammo hardness
Post by: hammer0419 on January 04, 2019, 06:57:16 PM
I recently tried some cast ammo from Hunters Supply. They shoot well but my concern is the hardness of the cast bullets. These things are like ridiculously HARD! My target was set up on 3" of pine board which is nailed to a huge oak tree. Bullets easy passed through board and into tree. My problem is there was ZERO DAMAGE to these bullets!! So they sure as heck are not expanding in an animal. Has anyone noticed this??

They have designated air rifle bullets which are relatively soft or were you using their standard hard cast?

Was using their 79g 308 air pellets. Literally the only damage was from my screwdriver digging it out of tree

If you have access to art pencils then you can do a scratch test to determine BHN to a high degree of accuracy.

I don't think they cast with different alloys no matter what they advertise.

Honestly, the .457 and .357 bullets of several weights each were poorly filled out and when I weighed them I got as much a 5gr variations.

They were very hard and did not shoot well so I never ordered any more.

My DISCARDS from my bullet casting are higher quality!

Others may have had different quality expectations or just I got bad batches but 2 weights each in two different caliburs shows it was not just a single bad day of production to me.

Keep looking.

I had bought some 95 gr pentagon hp for my Recluse! Its tuned by Will P and was getting around 1040 fps with this bullet!Done testing aswell as hunted with it and got ZERO expansion.Small dent it the bullet was about it!At that velocity it Should have pancaked but never could get one to open up.Not ballistic gel, water jug,wet books or the turkey I shot!Flew decent but I bought them for a hollow point a the time. Now I cast my own and even with wheel weights I can get my 115gr at 970 to expand to .590!That should tell you about their alloy! If you want Ammo check ebay.Saw some decent prices on their, cheaper then HS!

probably casted on casting machine so alloy needs to be hard. Otherwise bullets get damaged when dropping and sliding in that machine.

Glad I'm not the only one. Like I said mine flew fine. I weighted dozens of them. Maybe 1 out of every 20 varied so pretty good. They are just ridiculously hard. I can't find any other 308 ammo that's not going to break the bank.

I just found out their bullets are 95/5 lead to tin.

If anyone knows of a place to get ammo at a reasonable price it would be greatly appreciated.

Richard Krebs of Hikalbigbore.com has some great stuff and very reasonable prices. He is very meticulous with his casting and individually inspects every one for weight and requested sizing with calipers.

No problem, I would post the expansion photos but imgur is acting wonky this morning,

Any expansion would be better than Zero. They told me expansion is no good. Any softer the bullets WOULD NOT penetrate the hide of animals! I didn't even bother with a response.

Yeah, best to leave that one alone!! Weight retention is the key, much different than a bullet that doesn't expand at all!

Be hard pressed to find more consistent ammo than our swage ammo

Absolutely, when I want to test a rifle to see what accuracy it is capable of I use NSA. Highly recommended.

But sorry Nick, I still cast because I want bigger HPs than you provide or weights you don't have yet.
I shoot about 80 to 100 big bore shots a week, 52 weeks a year.  I have to cast because otherwise I could not afford it, even at your very reasonable prices.  An airgunner who does not need the volume I consume in my 'obsession' and wants high quality HAS to go swaged.

I weight every bullet and might cull 25 or 30% of a casting session ( if it is .5 off weight it goes) and I am an expert caster whose bullets usually look perfect externally.  With the NSA, every bullet is exactly on weight and consistent and that is what is needed for accuracy.
Basically I'm trading a lot of my free time for the bullets I produce versus someone with less time trading their money for your time producing.  :D

I totally get that.  We provide a product for those who need it.  For those who need it, I think we provide a good product and a fair price making it a good value.

Our price per box of 100 of top quality ammo if often our competitors price per box of 50.

I have used NSA in the past, great stuff for sure, just didn't perform as well in the bulldog for me. I think it was sized too small though as I had gotten it from another bulldog owner. May have to try some more from you directly. I believe the ones I got were .355 where my barrel prefers the .358.

The bullet I have in bulldog is the 142 grain boattail.  That bullet is a tack driver, size to  357

Cost is a huge thing for me at this time. This past year has been horrible. However, I would NEVER use inferior ammo when hunting. We all owe it to the game we are after for the most humane kill possible.

The issues with Hunter Supply are well documented. right in the neighborhood of pure junk.

Expanding bullets not for shooting game? Really?

95/5 Tin, I don't think so. Not even close. They are dull grey. Tin in that high a mix is bright silver

 And NOT THAT HARD!!!

They are famous for feeding AirGunners a line. Look elsewhere. A HUGE Shoutout to Nick at NSA! He doesn't cut corners, feed bull, or try to misguide us. A top provider!!!

I had wanted to test the bhn in them but never did.I used them to cut other bullets in the pot.Id throw 4 Lbs of pure and 5 or 6 of the 95 gr php in the mix for fill out!I have a tuned Recluse that chucked the 95's at 1000 fps and never got any expansion! Not in billistic gel...wet phone books,or water jugs!Nothing!
