Title: Swapping Gauntlet Parts
Post by: PumaCarl on April 05, 2020, 01:38:49 PM
Haj, I originally asked this question when they first came out and never saw a definitive answer, and you are certainly one of the few qualified to answer, so here it goes; can I take a complete upper receiver/barrel shroud assembly off of a .22 Gauntlet and put it on the lower, stock, pressure tube, bottle assembly, of a .25 Gauntlet? Does everything basically line up? I know the transfer port would need to be matched but besides that any reason that it wouldn't work.  This seems like the easiest route to shooting the .25 grain, and up, pellets and potentially, slugs. These "whole" guns can now be found cheaper than a TJ's barrel for my Marauder. I tried doing a search but the search function on all the forums are really lacking. Thanks for any help or insight you have on it!

i'm actually looking to do this same exact thing PumaCarl. And yes it is way easier than one thinks. The .22 cal barrel and .25 cal barrel have the same outer dimension. from my searching and info i have gathered...all one needs is the .22 barrel and pellet probe(bolt). pretty much a drop in no mods needed. Now the other side of this is you need a way to adjust bottle pressure down slightly or a way to adjust the hammer hit which the JSAR super tune kit will give you.
My .25 is currently slinging 25.4 gr Air arms at 888 with a reg set point of 1750 psi or so. Only mods done are the JSAR tune kit and barrel port enlarged to 11/64".
Apparently the .22 cal barrels were punched out to .25 cal from what i have heard. I'm hoping to put in my parts order tomorrow. cost will be right around $120

Yes you can do exactly what you've written. In fact I have taken a .25 lower and married it to a .177 upper and made an incredible high energy .177 blaster.
Just to be clear, you do not need to make any other changes to attach the .22 upper to a .25 lower except maybe adding a Hajimoto Productions Super Tune Kit to bridle that hammer preload  ;)

pretty sure you can just swap barrel and bolt if i'm not mistaken. had you tried this haj?

Thanks for the reply! Very cool guys. Haj, did you, or do you, recommend cutting off the choke, if shooting slugs? Those FX hybrids are looking very tempting for the wind, on trying for starlings.

afaik none of the gauntlets are choked. that is per May 10 2019 gauntlet schematic.

I do not recommend slug in the Gauntlet at all. It has a relatively slow 1:20" twist rate is does not do well with slugs. I have personally tested over 27 types of slugs and none of them performed consistently.
Also barrels are not choked on the Umarex Gauntlet.

Thanks for the heads up on that! You saved me from a lot of aggravation. I am really glad that I came back to this thread before I decided to buy a .25.

Dang. none of the gauntlets like slugs...? is that the .22 or for .25? MAybe i better rethink the .22 barrel then. be abit more involved but could try to adapt a fx slug liner to it. More money to go that route as well.

I’m curious on the FX Hybrid slugs and have some on order for my .25 gauntlet

Dr. Haj

Have you ever considered a barrel swap something with a higher twist rate or longer

HP kit, adjustable Reg, larger bottle, and a
The right barrel = :-) and $$

I need to do some digging and research

I do want to qualify that of the 27 different types of slugs shot from the Umarex Gauntlet they were all in .22 caliber ranging from .216 to .219 sizing.
I have for my own satisfaction fit other barrels to the Gauntlet and they performed well, as one would expect but i am laser focused on another approach which may prove to be more... versatile lets say.

The issue as with most hobbys is when are you crossing the sensible line when it comes to investment in an entry level PCP. Because most people reading this post right now are not the buy it and use straight out of the box type people, most of you know the answer to the question I posed regarding "sensible investment"  ;D

LOL... that's a good one Hajimoto. I've probably invested enough into my .25 cal to buy 2 other ones at this point. Now my latest findings are the barrel to receiver interface isn't good. was going to get a LW barrel fitted to mine, but local machine shop wanted way too much to fit it.
My last test with NSA 26.8 in were grouping 1.25" at 52 yards. I'm well beyond the sensible line with mine, but now its a matter of making it a laser. Winds a re down here today so need to get setup and get the scope dialed back in.

hajimoto, its good to see that you haven't stopped tinkering with the gauntlets. I can just barely leave mine alone. Are you doing all calibers in your research? I'm hoping you'll have something good for the 25's.

This is great to hear.  You’ve been quoted on that without the qualifier, and I was slightly discouraged.

I’m going to be placing my order soon from you.

With just your kit I’m wondering what power levels to expect in .25.  If I can shoot 20/slugs I’m content with that.

Here is a 2 mags string from my .25 outta the box. With exception of 22CI bottle

I’d like to set this up as slug gun, thinking of putting in FX liner

What’s your process in fitting new barrel in gauntlet

been thinking on that a few times myself bunnyboyz. the best way i can see to do it, is to have a thimble machined to fit around the fx liner and at the same time have the shroud capture ring at the receiver machined as one piece, that the liner would slide into. This would then still be setup similar to factory and use the shroud to tension the barrel and help keep it in place. then open the barrel area of the receiver for the new thimble. but the down fall there would be needing a new thimble to re-fit the factory barrel.
But this would allow the Use of any caliber fx liner. And if the thimbles were made properly in the chamber side you could probably get away with not having to change the bolt probe.

Ordered the 600mm FX Superior liner today

Who knows when the heavy liners with heavier twist rates will appear.

These should be ideal for the fx hybrid slugs I have on order and  for the lighter weight slug sample packs.

- now I just need to see how much of Haj’s stuff I can order at once

I’m looking at thimble specs. Rallycross has done it on Hatsan but I still need to verify find proven gauntlet specs

Seems the twist rate of 1/20 may not be the issue. The Mini Raptor .250 barrel is 1/22 TJ's pellet barrel (Non Choked) and a laser with my cast. Although I am shooting heavier slugs. 39 gr thru 51 gr. which should do even worse at 1/22, but thy perform very well.

Gotta put on my Thinking Hat! ;D 8)

P.s., Anyone have the twist specs for the new Superior liners? Utah Airguns suggested that the new Superior barrel probably would only perform with very light slugs such as the Hybrid. We'll see. ;)

1-23.573 on the 600mm I ordered is my understanding

Hi, I just ordered my Gauntlet .25 @ airgundepot.com and I would like to know if someone achieved to get a spare .22 barrel for this rifle to make it swapable, or if you have found a way to machine one of the FX barrels offered online (If this makes sense).

Thanks for reading.

You will need the barrel and the bolt probe/pellet probe.  Everything else is the same.
Yes I personally have fit an FX barrel system to a Gauntlet. I think a LW or TJ is a better and more reasonable option.

If you can find new parts. Umarex says their stuff is being held up in customs for months. I have been trying to convert my .177 to .22 gauntlet for a while.

Hi Hajimoto,

was just reading this thread and wonder what did you have to do to fit a FX barrel system to a gauntlet...

thanks in advance
