Title: New to me Crosman 160
Post by: kelvinator on June 27, 2017, 05:53:14 PM
Been looking for one of these on and off for a while now and finally jumped on one last week.
It arrived yesterday in nice shape.
3 rd variant, seems to shoot really, really good.
Adjusted the trigger, and cleaned the barrel.
Couldn't be happier with it.
Chrono'ed 650-660 fps with 14.3 gr CPHP at 78 degrees, which really surprised me.
So for grins I set it in the sun for about 5 minutes and it hit 703 fps !

Scored it online, which I rarely have any luck with, not that I have much luck locally either HA! :-\
Had almost made up my mind to get a QB78.......and may still get one, but glad I waited.

That was great find online. Classic. I have a Umarex Fusion that is a quiet one hole shooter at 10 meters. But not everyone likes the synthetic stock. Might end up with a QB  if I don't go over to the darkside.

You just bagged a prime example of arguably the best designed Co2 rifle ever made.

Mine is a delight to carry/shoot, and still drops squirrels like a thunderbolt. Good barrels on these. Near match accuracy.

Urs shoots hot, for sure. Mine is a 14.3/12+ft lb gun.

I'd call that a score

Beautiful 160 Pellgun! I see even the variant 3 still has the Elm stock like my Variant one. It is odd to me that the Air Force indoor trainers that got the Williams Peeps also use the steep ramp front blade sight mine has? Darn fine shooting rifles, as stated. That is a well-documented fact. I remember when we were kids, we all wanted these rifles, since, in our minds, they were top of the line technology in those days. And yours likely came with the improved valve I bought from "A" online that turned out to be a later Crosman design upgrade. It's in the service manuals I have as a .PDF file. But boy, do these things hold gas well!? It had about 10 shots worth left in it from the last video I did updating the chrono numbers with it last Saturday. I'd cleaned all the air rifle's barrels, noticing a velocity drop-off since I did videos with them last. Not one bit of gas leaked out in all that time! I'll also show a 10M target I put 10 rounds into with it. I've clocked a best with it of 660FPS and 11.71FPE so far. I've got some chronograph numbers with a few different pellets if y'all would care to look at'em?

Nice rifle. If I had to draw up a picture of a 3rd variant 160 I wanted to buy, that would be it right there.

Congrats on the find. Many many hours shooting.

Leonard, your 1st variant is a beauty.
I sourced a NOS set of those Robinson scope mounts in black.
Mounted a little 4X Bushnell I had laying around on it and it looked great.
Shot a few groups with it, but didn't really seem to be able to group any better than with the factory sights.
So....I took the scope off.
I like to keep things as simple as possible, but the scope would certainly be better in low light conditions.
Here is the last group I shot yesterday with the factory sights. I think it's a keeper.
5 shots @ 20 yards outside with 14.35 gr JSB Exact, which it seems to like only marginally better than CPHP's.

Thanks for the props. Mine blew out that bulls eye in my post with that Optima 3-9x32 scope installed. As for me, I'm 61 and wear trifocals. I'll take all the help I can get at this point! I like resto-modding rifles. worked on some more parts for the CVA Kentucky long rifle today.

From Leonard:
"I remember when we were kids, we all wanted these rifles, since, in our minds, they were top of the line technology in those days."

The funny thing for me is where and when I grew up, NO one had or wanted a CO2 rifle.
They were regarded as leak prone and weak on power.
Which, consequently, is the attitude I have carried in my head, until now.
As kids, we all had pumpers, which, looking back, was probably because the CO2 cartridges were just one more thing our parents had to pay for, HA!

Nice 160. I should get mine out and spend some time with it. IIRC it had a small leak last time I had it out. 16 days shutdown from work begins Saturday. Lots of stuff on the list.

I used to love shut-down time! Dad and I both worked at Ford in Cleveland. Time for guns and fishin' rods. Besides a lil work on the cars and house. The Co2 rifles were rare around here back when we were boys and they were new. They had more power than the BB guns we had.

Pulled the 160 out yesterday afternoon. Yeah, that little leak has turned into a full dump of both C02 carts as soon as you pierce them. I had planned on putting this one on the classifieds but looks like I'm going to have to reseal it first.

This thing has not quit surprising me.
I shot some heavy 32.4 gr Eunjin's through the chrony this AM.
517, 522 and 515 fps for just over 19 FPE  :o  ::)

And judging from mine before it leaked, I bet it's very accurate as well.
Probably why the AF used them for indoor training.

Wow, that's an awesome looking rifle! I'm a newbie here and just picked up a Repeater 400 (similar looking) at a flea marker on the 4th of July. I'll be anxious to crony it now that I have seen how hot yours is. Nice find!

The 400 is a little bit different animal from a 160, based more on a model 180.  They are great shooters, mine get right around 600 fps on "high" power.  Selective power settings are a nice feature.  You'll have to have wadcutters to feed from the magazine.

Yes I found some Gamo wadcutters that seem to feed well enough. Mine doesn't appear to have the selective power feature. Maybe that is only in the first variant? There is a power adjustment screw under the cocking knob but I haven't messed with that yet. Next time I shoot it I will set up my chronograph.

OK I have had some time today to get this thing figured out a bit and do some chrony testing. I found the "selective power" feature. It takes a bit of finesse to make it work but the difference between high and low power is about 90 fps when high is around 600 fps. I also tuned the power adjustment screw to maximum. I shot a 45 shot string over the chronograph and got an average of 581 fps, high 628 fps, low 514 fps. Gamo 15.4 grain flat nosed pellet. One shot exceeded 13 ft-lbs. Now I need to get it outdoors for some accuracy testing. I am duly impressed by this little air gun.

The 400 is an awesome gun alright.  Lay in a supply of RWS Meisterkugelns, 14 gr, I've found them the most accurate in mine.  Will shoot a bit faster too.

Hi
Just found a 160 military' in the box.
Tried a couple co2's and yes it leaks. So sent it off to get fixed should be back this week.
Have a question? It takes two co2's does it use both or one at a time. I put one in  up and one down is this correct?
Thanks
 Bud

Yes, two carts "butt to butt".
You can put a used cart in the front to not waste co2 for a lower shot count.

Haven't sourced the hardware to connect to my bulk tank yet.
Thanks!

Awesome Kelvin! Looks almost identical to the one I have....
Crosman sure used some pretty wood back then.
Did you get the bulk fill cap from the "bow and arrow" guy we can't mention?

No I got the adapter from a guy Rob hooked me up with that makes airgun parts as a hobby I think.
Here is a 5 shot group with CPHP's from earlier.

I have one just like that only with sling swivels.  Great shooter if somewhat of a gas hog.  I shoot my 180s more these days, quieter and use less CO2.  160s are nice, though.  Accurate and hit hard.

I'm with you on the Cr 180. Doesn't hit as hard but such a nice little carbine. Doesn't hurt that I'm 5' 8" and the 180 feels great for my small frame. I have a Var. 1 and a Var. 3 180. Think I'm crazy but the trigger on my var. 1 is way lighter and zero creep. Karen gets the Var. 3 when we have "shoot the can in half first" contests. (it does look nicer)  ;)

On two 12g carts with the 160 I get about 30 shots above 620FPS and another 10 or so that drop steadily to below 500FPS.
I can tell it's wasting a lot of gas especially on the first 20 shots.
I wonder if there is a way to tune it for a little better shot count while keeping the velocity.
Maybe a stiffer spring in the valve?
Or lightened hammer?
Anyone got any experience with this?

Same power out of less gas? Lighter hammer and/or stiffer valve spring would get you less gas. Now you would need to make that gas flow more efficiently. Altered bolt probe? Smooth off all the transfer bottle necks?  Hmmmmmm.

Let us know how you get on. I've thought of trying that with my 180's......they already deliver less gas.
Title: Re: New to me Crosman 160
Post by: kelvinator on August 01, 2017, 06:36:30 PM
I've thought about doing a bolt probe mod, and probably will at some point.
I'd rather do it to a spare bolt in case I don't like the results, but I'll have to source another bolt.
I tried a high power valve from Mike at Flying Dragon in it.
His valve as supplied had a stiffer spring than what was in my original valve.
Since I figured the stiffer spring was for the Chinese rifles I swapped in the softer spring from the original valve.
It worked well and yielded 740fps with CPHP's, but with each shot velocity fell about 5fps for a total of only 20 usable shots on the two 12 gram carts.
So I put the stock valve back in as it was more consistent from shot to shot.
I wonder if the softer spring in my stock valve is original ?
Maybe the stiffer spring from the FD valve would work better in my stock valve.
Or maybe I should have left the stiff spring in the FD valve.
More questions than answers. :o :-\
I'll probably just have to experiment with it but I HATE taking the rifle apart so many times.
I enjoy shooting it WAY more than working on it HA !!!

Just make one from a 1/4" drive socket. I used a 4" grinder with a cutoff wheel, it was fast and easy and good to have because I've used it on a 106 and 114. It's a 3/8" and fits nice.

I made one out of an old wore out socket.
The flat steel bar will work well too, ya just need to find the right width to fit inside the tube.

I used the spring out of the Baker seal kit if I remember right? I also bought the newer Crosman valve assembly and assembly parts kit from the big A. Maybe spring was there's? Black spring that was longer. Or maybe just not compressed from the bolt closed squeezin' it for decades in closet after closet till recently? The Optima scope went south internally ( big surprise there-not!). So I swapped on the extra Centerpoint 4x32 I swapped off the Crosman optima I gave my son last April. Here's three Gamo Targets with 3 shots each @ 10 yards as measured. I used RWS superpoint extra pellets @ .22cal, 14.5gr.

Not bad by the second target when I finally got the scope adjusted pretty decent. Still waitin' to hear from Hatsan USA about the Optima 3-9x32...
