Since we are all guessing, I suspect that the check valve after the second stage, stuck open, that allowed the crank case to become pressurized when the oring wore on the second stage piston.
It appears to me that the "breather" is still intact. That thing is plastic threaded into the metal case. The "oil level sight cap" is also plastic threaded into the metal case. So, we're assuming the metal case would build enough pressure to bust that casing all the way around before either or both of those plastic items would release pressure?Something just don't sit right here.

If so I wonder if it gave first or if it broke on impact.
I believe this is the same brand.
Like I said Mike, I made a mistake, sorry.
I see nothing more here than a broken compressor. One large single section of casing laying less than 12" from the unit and some oil spilled (no sign of spatter) does not show me anything catastrophic in the least. However... it IS HPA !!! And it should serve as a reminder to all of us. Be it the pipe bomb we hold a mere inch from our face, or the pressure cooker in our shop, we MUST use common sense. That is the message I choose to take from this thread.
Well boys, keep on filling them with motor oil and what not. Hpa and oil.. When do we see the first "golden" filter explosion? I'm not kidding, these things are made from who knows what? Save a penny and loose an eye, save a dollar and its your head? Not the last one to go I'm sure. Stay safe and mindful on what you are doing. Really handy that self cutoff, boom. Just my 2C Marko
