-2.8* on the thermometer. Wind is 14 mph and gusty. Had 4” of snow yesterday. The high today will be about 12*. The sun is trying to peak through the clouds. I finely got a whole day off work. Should I go hunting? Or should I stay home and complain that I didnt go? That always makes the wife happy to hear me wine. Any smart squirrel would be holed-up. But then again, any smart hunter would be too! Oh well, won’t know if I don’t go. Wish me luck!

Good luck with the decision to go or not to go. Either way, be safe, at home with the wife or out in the cold, both places may be cold..
Just kidding about the wife and being cold. I hate not going hunting/fishing and thinking about the fun I missed, then on the other side dam it looks bad out there.
Start a fire (in the fireplace) and sit by it with the wife and watch some football.

Frozen tree rats for sure. Warm hunter stays home and day dreams about warmer times in the woods. I’m in NYS, last night I was at the local dairy testing out a new light on my Compatto and Beeman R7. The light was working great and I was clobbering the starlings along with a half dozen incidental rats. After a while the snow and cold started to get the best of me. Intended to go out tonight, but am staying in and day dream of hunting in the Spring. Plus I have lots of snow/ice to blow off the driveway.

Was a good day. Got up to 8* but still windy. Hunted from 9:00 to 4:30. I went 3 for 3 on Fox squirrels. I did see quite a few others. But couldn’t get good shots. I did learn something. After I left the truck, it was about an hour before I got my first shot. Had a long stare down with the first squirrel. Finally got a perfect 15 yard shot. Click! Either the valve froze shut or the hammer didn’t have enough tension to open the valve. The little bugger didn’t move so I cocked and shot again. The rifle went off and I got him. But it wasn’t a full power shot. Seems that in my hast to take the second shot, I didn’t realize that there was a pellet already chambered. By cocking again I loaded a second pellet. That would explain the less than expected full power second shot. I used oil instead of dry graphite on my last cleaning. I believe it was the culprit in the freezing cold. To my surprise, there were 2 holes in his head. Lucky I was close, or I probably would have missed him with both pellets. Didnt have any other issues for the rest of the day.
I was standing in a fence row and had a 4 point buck walk past me at 25 yards. About 5 min later 2 does ran past me at about 10 yards and the buck was hot on them. I thought that was pretty cool. Seed for next fall.
