I guess I'm not surprised at the price that was paid for this. First time I ever heard of them. Pretty nice.

That’s a bit much, doesn’t work and you have no front sight, that’s never a good sign?
-
No front sight? What is that weird looking thing up near the end of the barrel? I was looking at the overall condition, which looks pretty good, muzzle looks real good, and I assume it's fairly rare since I have never seen anyone talk about these. For sure, I wouldn't pay that kind of money for one but if it is indeed fairly uncommon I could see someone forking over that kind of money.
-
I've got one of those. They are actually pretty cool little guns.
Mine is currently missing the magazine tube, but I think I recently found one, (YAY).
fun little vintage backyard shooter/squirrel gun.
-
If you look at the bidding it was two guys going at each other from $190. Two alpha males that can happen. They aren’t that rare especially in that condition. Plus you have the risk it doesn’t work?
-
Mine has been resealed by Mac-1 and works fine. I've single loaded and shot it a few times. I'm sure it will be a pretty cool vintage repeater once I get the tube magazine for it.

That's the screw that holds a standard Crosman (plastic) front sight on the barrel. About a $3 part.

The magazine tube is worth about $50 by itself, if you can find one.

I was actually watching this since a 400 is on my bucket list. I was shocked to see it go for so much myself even though it seemed in decent shape.
-
Nice looking gun .it's fun to see them go for so much cash :o
-
I picked up one at a pawn shop awhile back for $80, required a reseal, bought the parts from Mac1. The one I have has the later trigger pac (not through the stock) and is one of the sweetest trigger i own.
Had a couple of the old ash can pellets stuck in the barrel, all the metal was covered in cosmoline. Since this has two levels of power and also an additional adjustment to increase or decrease the spring tension. All in all a nice rifle. Fortunatelly mine came with the magazine.

That is a lot for that gun and I still think I paid too much for my Ted Williams pistol recently. The seller described it as recently sealed and test which was a bald face lie because I took it apart today and it was like it was glued together, every o ring was hard as a rock and I had a heck of a time getting the valve out of it. I did destroy the bolt/handle though so I'll need parts for that. Other than that on the exterior it is flawless.
-
LOL it's funny right after I posted my reply here I went and checked an offer I made for a bolt and handle for my Ted Williams and they had a counter offer and I accepted so I've got the parts on the way. It probably won't be long and I'll have it shooting.

Cool! I remember I asked some questions of the guy who was selling that pistol and his answers didn’t seem quite right to me. Glad it worked out, it’s a very cool gun.

Steve I finally straightened out the threads on the barrel wherre the cap screws on for it too, also got the trigger assy. working good as well. I think the valve is going to be fine though, I've had another valve poppet(decent shape but hard) soaking in secret sauce for a couple days now and last time around I had good luck doing this. I think the poppet that was in it will be salvageable as well. Hopefully I won't have to stick any more money into this gun other than what I paid for the bolt and bolt screw for holding the slide on.
All in all this gun will look better than the pictures that what the seller posted it with, everything on the outside could come close to never being used and I'm sure that it never did see much use, whoever had it probably shot it for a little while and it ended up in closet or other storage space for years.
The odd part about this gun is the valve exhaust half is brass and the part where the piercing pin, shim, washer, screen and filter is aluminum. I think all five guns that I've got have little differences in all the valves.

That's a pretty crazy price for a 400, even if it were in perfect condition. I've bought and sold on ebay but never sold any air guns till last weekend. I need to thin out my collection and decided this is the way to go. Get a couple of people bidding against each other and they can really get carried away. I sold a Sheridan for almost twice what I expected to get for it.

I agree but I like Gunbroker, EBay’s fees seem to get me every time. Gunbroker is cheaper and much more straightforward. I also like the bidding format on gunbroker as a purchaser. You don’t have to guess, you have time to go back and forth. If you want it you know you can get it or walk away knowing you had a best shot. But EBay can bring out the crazies!

Yes about 1/2 of them are missing the magazine, not an easy part to find but you can shoot it without one.

Yesterday, Tiger Pawn in Columbia Missouri had one for $99. You can probably google and give them a call.

Someone was selling modern-made replacements for the tube-mags.
Can’t remember who, Mac, Baker...
Someone had them, awhile back

These are very nice rifles, like most Crosman 1950's - 1960's guns. But a ridiculous price, IMO. :o
-
I have a 400 in ~95% condition, along with whatever the Sears model is, ~85% condition. Both late models with cast trigger housing, without the silly loaded chamber indicator. The two of them together might be worth $300 IMO.
Last time I was at Mac-1 he had a Sears model in good shape (no mag) for I think $125.
-
I know where I can get a first variant for $80, but without the mag. I would rate it at about 90% in appearance (one or two small rust spots on the barrel, light scratches at the butt end). Don't know about the internals but it looks in really good shape. Has oil on the cap o-ring and I have other rifles from this same collector that are in excellent shape.
How hard are these to re-seal? I have a lot of experience with Crosman 13xx's.
I was just reading through the owners manual. What is with the "back off the cap 1/8 turn, only, to release the gas in the tube"? Page two of the attachment.
-
Stinger, the 400 is intended to use 2 CO2 cartridges - the outer one is pierced by tightening the cap, which has to be backed off to let the gas flow - the inner one is then pierced by hammer strike, The same scheme is used on 160 and most 600 models. Or, you can put a used (empty) cartridge in the outer position and tighten up, running from just one cartridge in the inner position.

Crosman CO2 guns of that era had pressurized tubes. There are (at least) two variations; one punctures the cartridge upon hammer stroke; the other had a piercing pin in the front end cap and pierces when the cap is turned in, turning the cap back 1/8 turn pressurizes the tube.
-
Aaahh. Got it now. Makes sense. I'm new to Co2's of this vintage.
Thanks guys.
-
I like my 400 :D
-
Well, you all got me going on this 400 thing, so I went and bought that $80 one that I mentioned above.
It shoots, but leaks as well. Very nice shooter and I can't believe how good the trigger feels for being such a simple design.
So now I'm looking for a seal kit. They're anywhere from $15 to $49. What would you guys/girls recommend?

Call Rick at Precision Pellet, he'll have what you need.

gracious I sold my,good shooting 85% Cr 400 last summer for less than half that. Just goes to show that worth is a tricky slippery thing.

Exactly, I look for a good amount of time before buying any particular airgun. I paid $93.00 shipped for mine in 2017 but then I would have gladly paid for shipping to avoid the butt plate being broken when I got it. The seller refunded $35 dollars (if I remember right) for his bad packaging and the damage it caused. I was able to repair it pretty well but it still bothers me that it was broken just because it was not handled/packed with care. But I know I still did great getting it in working order and with the magazine. Hopefully his refunding the $ for damage has and will prevent such careless packaging on any others he has sold or sells in the future.

I hear you. I got several guns "rattling" around in badly packed boxes before I added a packaging statement to all the sellers I bought from.

Try precision pellet in Pa. I had Rick reseal my 400 and he put a new safety and mag tube on it. I have used him for several virgin purchases and repairs.

Same here. Rick just rebuilt my 400 valve and sent me the rare barrel band screw that had somehow snapped while removing it. Total turnover time including shipping was 9 days. He's very willing to advise over the phone as well.
Great guy!

Rick seal kit for my 180 got it running very quickly. Can’t go wrong with him.
