Title: RE-Building my spring compressor
Post by: 454 Big Block Chevy on January 13, 2011, 05:58:28 PM
So a few weeks back i had built a spring compressor, and although it did work, it was quite a pain in the rear to get to work effectively.  So with the tools available from my dad while i'm here on vacation, i tore it down and saved the bolts, and the clamp..... scrapped everything else.  here's some pictures of it about 2/3's done.  the gun clamp/vice is done, i just have to install the barrel stopper, and the compression tube clamp, and its done..  I would gladly take some hints/suggestions that really seem to make a compressor better, would be super greatly appreciatedr.  Thanks!!!!

pics are with my phone, so they stink

Looks good Ed, but watch the alignment of the screw on the clamp, if its skewed, there could be trouble at OK Corral! ;)

it looks misaligned from the picture, but i tripple checked it, before i drilled the holes... and i've already put a AG in the clamp, and moved the threaded screw in and out and it stays centered.. i'm guessing hte clamp isn't hte greatest of quality, and has a bit of slop.  but it is quite tight when i wiggle it.. i don't know why the thing looks goofy in thee picture.. i need ideas on a barrel stop at the other end tho... other than a 2x4 piece just screwed to it.

Should work once you get the alignment cleaned up.
I prefer the (K)eep (I)t (S)imple (S)tupid approach taken by Perry, with the big (48"!) Jorgensen bar clamp and boards.
It allows me to bolt up just about anything with only a second or two to adjust the length without having to modify a thing except reposition the movable clamp section.

454,  the only advice I have is ,  use the largest diameter bolts you can.  Example use 3/8s vs 1/4 inch.  And use washers.

Old Pink,,,,I just LOVE your compressor.  Wish I would have done mine that way,,,,simple.  I went thru a lot of complications and a LOT of time and work.

I think yours aught to be listed in the library as an example.  Had I seen yours I would have copied it.   Thanks for sharing now.

Mine is not nearly as nice looking as Perry's but it works nicely.

Northern Lights, the bar is held down by the two upright hinged blocks, and (not really necessary, but added for durability) two steel straps with wood screws.
Also, you are right about the board clamps, both of them are hinged on one side, making it a snap to put the whole thing in, then snap them secure with the carabiners.
I'll see if I can take a few shots from different angles of it and put them up on here.
Don't mean to hijack, 454.

The simple approach, as I see it and Scott shows, is to let the bar clamp do the work at both ends and have the hinged blocks keep the rifle's action secure and in place. The hinged blocks (and bar clamp) are secured to a 2X6 plank and you have a quick and easily operated spring compressor.
