These are produced out of LW6, which is our own steel. It is not the same as 416R. Do you have any specific questions about it?
...The stainless steels, which do not require bluing are LW6, which is used mainly for .22l.r. and similar cartridges and LW50 which is used for centerfire cartridges. This last material was developed in 1994-95 as a safe alternative to 416R and to solve durability problems associated with 416R...
I anticipate the most the barrel will stick out of the chuck is about 3 or 4 inches. Do I need to support the majority of the barrel that is sticking out to the left of the lathe?
Hi All,I want to machine some stainless steel barrels and I don't have any lathe experience. I bought one of the recent $368 7x14 mini lathes from Ebay so now is as good a time as any to start learning. So I figured I can buy some 5/8" steel rod and practice on that till I know what I am doing. When looking for rod or bar stock there are different grades: Carbon steel, tool steel, cold rolled, cold drawn, hot rolled???What should I buy? Also If you have a link to the material at any of the local home improvement stores or Amazon that would help a lot. Also any advice is always welcome! I am shopping now for tool holders, cutting bars and a dial indicator to check runout.Thank you All in advance!Taso
