what's the best speed and tool for machining Delrin rod stock? I can't seem to get the knack...
I haven't had any issues using about 1000 rpm using hss lathe bits hand ground the "normal way" as shown in this video...........
I've never tried "good expensive carbide inserts" but I have had issues cutting Delrin using generic carbide inserts and keeping a good finish using my bench top lathe.
Here are some Delrin parts I've machined on my bench top lathe.
A couple spring guides with a Delrin spacer/thrust bearing and a top hat.............
LOL.....I've even used black Delrin for this two piece spring guide so I didn't need to hog the whole guide from a piece of 1 1/8" diameter stock..........
I've also made parts from molly filled 6/6 nylon (Nylatron) and found that the Delrin was "less messy" to machine since the nylon was cut off with long tough strings that tended to get all wrapped up around the part and chuck. I'm currently testing an oring sealed piston cap in my .177 HW95 made of molly filled 6/6 nylon like this.............
After the "1000 shot look-see" it's holding up just fine.........
Originally my oring sealed piston caps were turned from 6061 T6 aluminum, then a while back I started adding a Delrin bearing to the piston cap, and now it seems that I'll be switching to "all molly filled 6/6 nylon" if the stuff doesn't erode at the transfer port from the heat and pressure.
Early piston cap...........
Later adding the Delrin bearing which almost doubled the work vs solid aluminum...........
Anywhoo......don't get discouraged because my bench top lathe set at 1000 rpm using SHARP hand ground HSS bits works just fine for Delrin. LOL....I even made a fitted Delrin spring kit for a Cummins Truck Load sale Chinese B3 that cast me a whopping sum of $19.95 over a decade ago when living in West Virginia using an even smaller Harbor Freight bench top lathe than my current LatheMaster...........

I use High Speed tool steel cutters hand ground. No more than 5* rake and a healthy radius on tip gives a nice curl off and great finish.
pending part diameter med to fairly high speed on spindle

carbide inserts with positive rake will give a shiny finish on black Delrin( I never use white, idk why ) The sole reason is the integrated radius of the cutting edge.. With HSS, you need a little know how to get that perfect balance of radius and sharp to get the perfect finish..Both are fine , I run 1 inch at 600 rpm

I work on delrin, teflon & other polymers. Used for O rings, gaskets and high temperature, high speed industrial applications for custom requirements. 800 RPM is good enough for teflon with HSS tools, Delrin requires at least 1000 RPM with HSS tool or in some cases carbide tips (inserts). Initially we used to get flakes chipping off from surface but slow feed rate and MRR at high speed is key to good finish.
