I was shooting my modified 1977 the other day and I started experiencing partial valve lock. It started randomly but over time increased in frequency. After removing the receivers and hammer spring I worked the hammer/sear and noticed it was barely moving the poppet stem. Looking at the forks I could see they were compressed where the crimp retainer and fork meets.
I tried using JB weld to attach a washer cut to a C onto the sear fork but that actually made the valve lock situation worse. I ended up removing the crimp retainer from the poppet stem and installing a 4mm washer then a 3mm washer, and finally installing a e-climp for a 2mm shaft. The washers distribute the load by providing a larger contact surface for the sear.
The e-clip also makes the poppet a whole lot easier to service (replace o-rings / stopper) in the future. After reassembling the gun the new poppet retainers worked great. No more valve lock, I tested up to 24 pumps. All tests resulted in complete air dumps. The e-clip is pretty easy to install and remove so tuning poppet lift can be done by adding or removing washers.
I ordered the e-clip kit below. There are some crazy sizes in the kit lol.
