Smells like pink oil to me. For CO2 guns, is there a difference between non detergent 30W oil, with some pink food coloring added of course, and Crosman's Pellgun Oil? Have to admit the packaging is mighty convenient, but when you run out the stuff has to be ordered if not available locally...

some people say it's transmission oil. though i never had the nerve to try that instead.
-
Here in Va. they keep it in Gander Mountian stores.

ATF? possible. Lots of seals, pistons, etc in an automatic transmission.

Well, there's transmission oil and transmission fluid... Transmission fluid is used in cars with automatic transmissions... My car's stick (standard) and I've changed the transmission oil on it... It's possible that automatic transmission cars also use transmission oil in a separate system but I've never worked on one and not really sure about the specifics...
Transmission oil is usually thick HEAVY weight oil that is designed to work with the heavy gears in the transmission... It's way thicker than motor oil... It's like the viscosity of cold honey...
About the Pellgunoil, I've read somewhere that the old Crosman manuals used to say to use motor oil in their guns but that's back when there were no detergents in motor oil... I use non detergent motor oil in my pump guns with no problems... Pellgun oil is just too expensive and harder to get a hold of.... I'm thinking Crosman just adds a coloring and the packaging and just charge whatever for it...

What is it?
Crosman Pellgunoil apparently is a 20-weight, non-detergent, petroleum-based oil that has o-ring and seal conditioners added. That's what colors it red. Daisy used to offer their own brand of oil for the same purpose. When they stopped production, they simply told owners to use 20-weight, non-detergent motor oil in their guns. Of course, you don't get the seal conditioner when you do that.

I called Crosman and one of their tech support people said transmission fluid would work just fine.

I also "heard" it was Trans fluid.....I have been using MAC1's Secret sauce for years now and find that a little goes a long way. Hope this helps!

I have been using trans fluid since '74 when I bought a brand new Sheridan .20. Also use it in my '49 Crosman 100, my Crosman 2200M, my Crosman Mark ll. None of these guns have ever had a seal problem and when I bought the Crosman Mark ll it had been sitting for years. When I put the first CO2 cartridge in it leak right out. So bad I could hear the hissing. On the next cartridge I gave it a shot of trans fluid and that was 2-3 years ago and fixed that problem real fast.
My original Sheridan Manual say this about lube: "Any neutral light body oil with a good cold test is satisfactory for use throughout your Sheridan. The average household utility oil sold in all hardware stores and sevice stations for sewing machines, lawn mowers, hinges, etc is perfectly satisfactory."

The dad of a local I met also has an old sheriden and hes also been using trans fluid for the last 20+ years with no issues. Not many know but trans mission fluid is great for all sorts of rubber seals.
