The Gehmann adjustable iris is worth every penny. In bright light you can turn it down and have a crisper sight picture, in dim conditions you can open it up to see the target and front sight better.
Now regarding the 1.5X, does it make the target clearer than without using the 530 iris? I shoot with glasses, but i find that i can hardly see the border of my target paddles (which are black) and sometime miss.

Keep in mind there are two variables here: the adjustable iris opening, and the 1.5x lens.As jkingrph noted above, the main job of making the target clear - i.e., maximizing depth-of-field for the given target and lighting - is really done by adjusting the iris opening. In that regard, you'd find even the basic Gehmann 510 (iris only, no lens) to be a big improvement over the plain Williams eye disk. But adding a lens with a bit of magnification and the ability to focus, is of course even better.
Also if i was to source a vintage diopter sight that is not too overpriced which ones should i look for?
