Title: Benjamin Genesis 22 sufficient power?
Post by: PJthelocksmith on March 18, 2023, 06:21:06 PM
I've had this rifle for at least 6 years. I broke it in and shot it maybe a handful of times since. I was just to busy. Now I'm wanting to use it to hunt with but worried it isn't getting enough power output. I haven't got a chronograph to test velocity but from what I understand it should be able to at least penetrate a 3/4 inch piece of plywood at 20 yards or so. Mine won't penetrate it fully at 5 feet. It almost does but not quite. Curious to know if you guys think it's sufficient or if it just needs to be replaced because I cannot find parts for it at all.

Should be more than enough for rabbit and squirrel, keep your shots to distances you can kep a group under a quarter or smaller and they will die. Your actual speed with lead pellets id more like 850 with a 16 gr .22 lead pellet.
I have that rifle one of my back yard favs, even did well for plinking  soda cans out to 100.

PJ

I gave my son my 22cal Benjamin Genesis/Legacy NP.

I now have 22cal Crosman Redtail NP. (Different stock but basically the same gun.)

None of these rifles will shoot ..fully through .. 3/4   inches of new plywood.

If yours is accurate then you are good to go sir.

Thanks for the replies. It still shoots amazingly. Would this be enough gun to shoot a bandit or a possum within 10 yards with proper shot placement? I just don't want to be unethical if I can avoid it.

At ten yards it should handle a possum easily.  The coon may be a bigger challenge - they're pretty sturdy.  Shot placement would be critical.  As far as parts, I believe your gun is part of the B18 / B19 family.  Parts from this series are pretty much interchangeable.

I would certainly think so, especially if it was a head shot and in the right spot on the head.

If your rifle is close to making it through 3/4 inches of plywood at 5 ft. then it will penetrate the skull at 10 yards and maybe even pass through it altogether.

Go to the Gate called Shadows Place and read some of his past posts on what he has done on Raccoons and Opossums with his break barrel rifles.

If we can take this up in the Hunting Gate, I will give you some of my hunting stuff with the rifles I have owned.

Graphic hunting images are banned here but are OK in the Hunting Gate.

Hi Tom

You are right, things interchange a lot on Crosman/Benjamin guns.

Parts are available, he just does not know how to access them yet.

He has to get a parts list and give Crosman the exact part number.

The NP gas piston and action parts are the same as my Redtail.

Only his rifle stock is unique to the Genesis/Legacy rifles.

I learn more and more every day on here. This is an awesome place. So as far as pellet weight goes is it more of a debate rather than a x is best but y is good also? Like more weight is less fps but does the power differentiate very much?

PJ

You need accuracy and penetration for what you want to do.

If 22cal H&N 16.2gr Hornets are accurate in your rifle.... they will give you Very Good penetration.

They are Not Cheap at $23.79 for a tin of 200.   These are Not meant for Plinking.

If you gain successful hunting shots..... then the price is not bad at all and well worth the cost.

Here is a link to PA on the H&N Hornets > https://www.pyramydair.com/product/h-n-hornet-pellets-22-cal-16-grains-pointed-200ct?p=1206 (https://www.pyramydair.com/product/h-n-hornet-pellets-22-cal-16-grains-pointed-200ct?p=1206)

PJ..We are getting into in-depth hunting situations.  This should be done in the Hunting Gate.

You should ask a Moderator to intervene and move this thread.

To do that, just click the Report To Moderator link at the bottom right and let one know.

On PA there is a link to the manual on your gun.
In that manual is calls your gun out as a Model 33005.
If you go to Crosman's Owners Manuals and Parts Diagrams page and look at Benjamin rifles, find 33005, you can download the exploded diagram and parts list to order straight from Crosman.

Birds, Rats, Squirrels and Rabbits, with a good clean kill shot you should be good.
