Title: Need scope suggestion for pigeon hunting
Post by: igolfat8 on January 05, 2019, 10:27:05 AM
I shoot pigeons inside dark dairy barns, 10-60 yards, Streamline 22.  Can you suggest a few scopes to consider? Budget is 350 or preferably much less. I don’t want a Heavy scope. I do some informal target shooting out to 100 yards too.

At your budget you’ll have to compromise. I’ve done a bit of shooting in dark or dimly lit dairy buildings. You’ll definitely benefit from an illuminated reticle, get a scope with at least a 50mm objective and consider attaching a light with a red filter to your rig. I’m slowly evolving my night shooting and don’t want to spend money if I can get the pests in a simpler, as effective method. Plus I prefer pesting outside and during the day. Good luck, lots of scope choices in your price range. Pick some out repost your choices you’ll get lots of help here.

I hope I'm not starting out too O.T. right away; but since you mentioned this, how do the pigeons, rats, or other animals react when you shine various lights on them?

I don't have any experience in this kind of hunting, but I'm sure you'll want a very large exit pupil.  My first (cheap) scope's exit pupil was considerably smaller than my own pupil is when there's little light, making the scope all the dimmer.  I'd say large objective lens, hold the magnification down (like 4x?), large exit pupil, and illuminated reticle.

Tim, I use this scope and accessories for hunting rats and ground squirrels, day and night use. I had to put a couple o’rings (#218) on the flashlight to make iit fit snug in adapter. Most animals cannot detect the red Light spectrum hence the red filter (lens). Bipod has picatinny rail for flashlight whose beam is adjustable. Hope this at least gives you ideas. Charlie at Airgun Optics gives a 10% discount if you mention it to him for GTA members. Better to purchase from Charlie as it will get to you much quicker.

I do a lot of this type of shooting, and I don't use a scope. Instead, I use a laser I bought at Big5 for just $20.

I thought I would update this thread. I have tried several scopes, Bushnell, Nikon, Mueller, Discovery and finally settled on a SWFA fixed 6 power. It has great glass, super bright and a fast reticle that meets my needs. I am totally happy with this one and see no need to try anything else.

Next I’ll be looking for a scope for EBR, 100 yard target shooting.

Still looking for the 100 yard scope. I have a variable power on now but I’m thinking strongly about going to a fixed power scope since this will be for a dedicated BR gun.

How about a higher power fixed SWFA?

Well much has transpired since this thread was started. I moved from a fixed 6X, to a 10X and finally ended up with a fixed 12X SWFA on my hunting rifle.

Tried many on my 100 yard rifle and it wears either a fixed 36X Sightron or 40X Mueller. Simple thin cross hairs with a micro target dot in the center. The busy Christmas tree and hash mark reticles were too busy and made it difficult to see holes at 100.

Sounds like you blew your budget to the moon! ;D

What is that 3, 4, 5 times your original budget?  Well done. 8) :o ;)
