I'm guessing it's the same mother of the 4 cubs? I never thought about it before but I don't know if they breed and carry cubs while still raising/training the previous litter? I think brown bears will kill cubs to force the mother back into eustrus. (sp) Well according to google the mother and cubs stay together for 16-17 months then she breeds again, and has a new litter 7 months later. That explains the 2 year cycle.

You could try marking them with paint like you were going to do with your "breeder rat" program.

Several years ago I spent a week hunting bears in Northern Maine , 6 days sitting in a tree stand over a bait station, never seen a bear , and you golem in your back yard , go figger....
maybe try to grab a cub to keep as a pet , and bring your most powerful springer just in case.
