New Crosman Vantage question
«
on:
May 27, 2022, 03:55:43 PM »
Two weeks ago I purchased a Crosman Vantage directly from Crosman. I am having a heck of a time trying to learn to shoot this thing
The best I can do at 10 meters is to get within a 2" circle. I have tried 6 different pellets and I am trying to learn the artillery hold.
I have shot around 200 pellets thru this rifle so far and today decided to check the FPS.
I tried three different pellets and all of them are going slower than my 362 with 6 pumps.
Here are the results:
Vantage 11.9gr 569fps 362 (6 pumps) 632fps
Vantage 14.3gr 527fps 362 (6 pumps) 588fps
Vantage 18gr 457fps 362 (6 pumps) 538fps
I have cleaned the Vantage barrel (twice), checked and tightened all screws, and I use a pellet seater when loading.
Any ideas or recommendations would be appreciated
Thanks, Tom.

Hi an welcome on the forum Thomas,
Indeed it's far from normal for a full-power Vantage. Is your rifle jumpy, does it have a harsh shot cycle/recoil? I'm suspecting a cut main seal, often they get damaged right at the factory when they install it. You would then have to take the rifle apart for a check/replacement.
Could also be a breech seal with a severe leak, you may want to do the tissue test. Put a small piece of tissue over the breech of the gun after you cock and load it, point it in a safe direction and shoot while observing the tissue piece. If it's blown away the breech seal leaks, and needs shimming or replacement.
Lastly, if you don't want to mess with the waranty or tinker on the gun, then send it back to Crosman. I'm pretty sure this is a legitimate waranty issue, see with their Customer Service.

Don't seat pellets too deeply. A springer needs to build up pressure to POP the pellet from the lead and expand the skirt into the rifling.
I think a full power Vantage should be sending 14.3 CPHP around 750fps-800fps. Maybe they sent you a 500fps Canadian Export model by mistake?
If truly a full power US version and still under warranty you should probably contact Crosman for warranty service.
Sounds like it could be a damaged piston seal (happens during factory assembly) or a weak NP gas spring. In either case I think warranty service may be best option.
My Vantage was from a third party seller and I chose to void any potential Crosman warranty. Pellet velocity was normal and not low like yours. It had NO muzzle crown and an actual burr at the muzzle. Large 2" patterns at 30' was the first clue. Pushing a pellet through the bore and examining the rifling marks (or lack of rifling) on the pellet was the clincher.
I repaired my Vantage here...

Contact Crosman for warranty. Those numbers are way low. They'll probably replace the gun. Hopefully the new one will perform better all around.

Thank you everybody for the replies. I did the tissue test for the breech seal and blew the tissue to shreds.
Never dawned on me to check the breech seal on a new air rifle.
Tried reversing the seal and shimming it with solder but it is still leaking (just not as bad).
Improved fps for the Crosman Premier 14.3gr to 600fps and the accuracy improved.
Will order a couple new breech seals and shims and go from there.
Thanks again for the help.

Sounds like the gun has some problems.
My artillery hold is hold so loosely if I coughed I'd drop it.
Google GRT or Charlie The Tuna Triggers. They will fit the Crosman and the little side lever on your gun list. A GRT trigger turns a good gun into a great gun.

Another great trigger option is to retrofit the Crosman NP2 or NP Elite trigger pack. Optionally with a lighter sear spring.

I'm just mentioning another option the OP can research. I've had better results with less effort and less frustration with the Crosman trigger packs. There's lots written about both options.

Today I received the new breech seals and a new piston seal.
Upon tearing the gun down, I could not believe the condition of the piston seal.
It was broken in two places and looked like it had been thru *(&^.
After replacing the breech seal, adding a breech shim, and replacing the piston seal YAHOO, its back.
14.3gr Crosman premier = 720fps
11.9gr Hobby = 810fps
18gr H&N = 640fps
Plus the accuracy if fantastic. I guess I have learned the artillery hold after all.
Thanks everybody for the help and recommendations.
Now its time to go shoot.
