Air refill in Austin, TX

Hi there, anyone from or around Austin, TX - how do you guys refill your air tanks and air guns? I'm more interested in refill services like scuba shops and how much do they charge for filling up the 74cc tank to 4500psi. Any recommendations? I've also inquired with my local fire station and they said no.

Looks like you have 3 dive shops. Most dive shops won't fill to 4,500 though.

Bummer... time to think about investing in a personal high-pressure air pump

Back when I started pumps were $1k up. Altaros made some waves when they entered the market at around $600. Now pumps are down below $300. Unless a tank is needed for portability, I would go that route. No hauling a tank back and forth multiple trips to a fill station. I went with a Yong Heng, because I wanted to fill my old SCBA tank. If I was filling just guns I'd consider some of the others, but I don't know about longevity on some of the 12v smaller models. Lots of research for you. Welcome to the "rabbit hole".

I have a hand pump (Hill) which is awesome! Reliable and very quality made. But I can't imagine myself in a sane state (both physically and mentally) after filling up the 74 size tank with the pump LOL. Out of my curiosity: what is the average cost of filling the 74cu ft or 98cu ft tank from zero to full 4500psi? I'd expect $25 in nowadays prices or am I not near?

I found it easier to tune the guns to a 2500psi fill than to try and deal with a compressor that is going to break. I get lots of fills from a 3k psi tank, and half the time he doesn't charge me to top it off.

The last time I had my :45 SCBA filled to 4500PSI it cost me $10 at a dive shop. Most I ever paid was $12 at a paintball shop. Again that was topping off from around 1800-2000PSI. Not sure how many cubic feet that is.

Many dive shops are not in the business of filling SCBA tanks so they often do not have the right adapter to fill it with unless the tank is equipped with a Dinn valve and not SCBA. They also may not be able to fill the tank fully as scuba tanks often stop at 3500 psi. It's been several years since I last paid for a fill but I think it was $10, I know it went up not long after I quit going there however. Many of us that fill our own SCBA are doing so with a Yong Heng compressor equipped with a secondary drier to keep water out of our tanks. Even with an occasional repair parts cost, my compressor has paid for itself many times over.

Maybe go back and ask the chief of your fire dept who does their hydro testing for them. The company that does, if they're close enough,
will have a high pressure compressor for filling them and may do it for you.
You might also look around and see if you have any place in your area that sells and services fire trucks and equipment since they might
well have one too. It's how I get mine filled and the guy that did said they also fill bottles for the local paintball crowd.
Another option might be to look around for welding supply shops who might have their own for filling air tanks for their customers.

Thanks for responses and suggestions - I appreciate that!
After careful evaluation of all the options in my area, I decided to pull a plug and invest in a hi-pressure compressor.
I'll share my opinion and thoughts once I get it.

Thinking about Alkin W31 Mariner.
Anyone has any experience using Alkin compressors? Any reliability issues?

Talk with the City of Austin Fire Chief about where air bottles are tested / filled? That's a Good One. He may not know what color the trucks are. #hyperbole Might have better luck stopping by a station in the middle of a weekday. (a relatively dead time)
Just snooping around the web:
There's a Dive Shop in town near 2222 and Burnet. Their web page says they do refills, but not what pressure.
There's a Paintball shop / field up in Jonestown and another 2/3's of the way out to Dripping Springs along 290. At least one of those will do to 4500 PSI.
I checked some of the industrial gas houses, but mostly they see to be in the 2k to 2.5k PSI range unless you get one of the big cylinders. There's a Home Brew supplier in town too that might be worth checking.
OP probably chose correctly getting a compressor. What side of the river are you live on?
