They work, I have done it more than once.

You can see the sight picture through the reflex? That's pretty slick if so.

That's pretty slick if so.I literally just finished setting something like this up for my upgraded .25 talon P. (18” LW barrel and modded valve shooting at 75 + fpe with 45-55 grain slugs. Works perfectly to confirm zero, rear sight is a flip up Feyachi. Front sight is a random high profile metal pin type sight that you can rotate to change elevation but it is a pain to adjust. The high elevation front sight on a pic rail I had lying around lines up perfectly with the rear peep and reflex. I had to try two different sights and Picatinny adapters to find the sweet spot. What’s great is that the illumination for the reflex sight makes it easier to use the Peepsight because in an environment where the front sight is hard to differentiate from the background you can turn on illumination and use the reticle of the reflex and ensure center via the peep sight. As you can see even when the camera is brought we out of alignment the reticle still appears to be in the correct place, so this budget Amazon (Chinese) sight corrects parallax error perfectly to my eyes.
The range and accuracy of the AR sight "depends."The military qualifications with iron sights were/are WAY farther than I would shoot a pellet rifle. How far can YOU shoot YOUR rifle, with accuracy? How good are your eyes and iron sight technique. There is ZERO magnification, so it all comes down to you.

I know M4's don't have that much space between sights, so maybe it wouldn't be too bad.

If you had one in the front and one in the back they could add 3” of space I think.I just decided to set this gun up with open sights just for an alternative shooting experience and for off hand close range plinking or target shooting. My eyes and the amount of ambient light are definitely the limits in terms of my being able to hit something small or dimly lit.I don’t know why those sights don’t come with the necessary tool to adjust the height of the front post. Came with a bunch of Allen keys that I don’t need but nothing to help me actually adjust elevation.
