Title: 1st air rifle - Hatsan Edge .22 or .25 ??
Post by: chico on December 22, 2018, 10:28:02 PM
looking for my first air rifle . . .

Local sporting goods store has the Hatsan Edge on sale . . .
The .22 and .25 calibers are priced at $64.99 for the rifle and scope combo.

They also have the Edge .177 cal ($54.99) and the Daisy 1100WS w/scope in .177 cal for $44.99.

Which do you recommend? Looking for best accuracy out to 30-50 yards.
Primary use will be for small game and field targets.

Should i look for something else or maybe a PCP ?

From what little i know, these appear to be very good prices for these rifles . . . your thoughts ?

Personally, get one in .22...real nice price, easy to work on, simple mods will make it even better and will easily shoot the 30-50 yards you mentioned and accurately once you get it settled in and get used to shooting it. Plan on a better scope if you do as the included one isn't all that great.

That said, at least a dozen people are about to tell you don't waste your money, buy an RWS 34 instead and tell you exactly why. I'm not one of them. I went with a Flying Dragon XS25 .22 which, while only a clone of the RWS 34, can be had fully tuned for less than the 34 and shoot just as well.

More than a few will happily tell you go PCP, which one and never look back. I own several and while much easier to shoot and more power come with a bunch of extra expense and hassle filling them which is something you don't need to worry about with a break barrel in the field. Just cock it, load it, shoot it, repeat.

Chuck, while those are very good prices, what is your budget, honestly?
I am a firm believer that you get what you pay for. Granted there is always good deals on a variety of guns out there.

To get a break barrel rifle that is accurate past 30 yards and strong enough to take small game is a high bar to set. I am afraid your going to have to look past the entry level, sub $100, guns.
That shouldn't mean you have to jump straight into the dark-side (PCP), there are Springers that will do it, but you're going to pay up for it.

Now, if you have say $300 for the gun and hand pump, you may very well want to look into PCP. You will be pumping about 50-60 firm strokes with a hand pump to get about 30 shots (on the average) depending on the gun. If that doesn't sound enjoyable, a compressor alone will cost you more than that.

Steve has a great point on FlyingDragon Air rifles. I have two of Mike's guns and am VERY happy with both. They are some of the best bargain for the buck out there.

Did you make it to the CMP shop in your town?

Steve/Scott - thank you
This past summer i purchased a PCP precision pistol that i am shooting regularly. A few weeks ago i purchased a Beeman P17 just for something different, and it is surprisingly accurate for the price.

My plans for an air rifle is to acquire a Hammerli AP20 precision PCP, however, with moving and renovating a new house, that may take a year or so to happen.

i could go with a more economical PCP, which i may do, as air supply and cylinder refills is not an issue for me.

i was thinking that the above mentioned guns, at the current sale price, may be a good way to go . . . but then, again, i can get a CMP rifle real easily and for only $105 . . . that may be the better way to go . . . ? ! ?

.22, more ammo choices. I think a heavy .22 pellet will do what a .25 can do.

I'm just one of those rare people that think everyone should own an inexpensive break barrel to shoot with, tinker with, learn to tune and tweak on among other things and an Edge Vortex in .22 with a better scope is a good starting platform, especially considering the price.

Mods and tweaks are easy and very cheap between a quarter for a screw and things you probably already have at home for filling the stock. I have the Vortex version in .22 and other than putting it in a wood Striker stock have never done anything to it except the longer trigger screw and cleaning the barrel and that rifle shoots FTT's very accurately out to the 30 yards or so I shoot and has taken it's share of tree rats very easily.

I have no doubt if I had the room to stretch to 50 that I'd have too much trouble dialing in to shoot that distance and still be accurate.

I have both the .22 and .25 Edge as well as the .22 Webley Spector (actually the same gun in different furniture). All 3 are VERY accurate out to 45-50 yards and will take squirrel or rabbit at that distance all day long. My Spector is my back door gun and doesn't even have a scope. I've taken squirrel and rabbit several times with it at 45 yards--one shot, one kill. As far as the caliber is concerned, just toss a coin. The .25 WILL cost more for ammo but compared to powder burners it's still dirt cheap. That is an excellent price on the Hatsans!
Best of luck with your decision!

Yep this. Spring guns are guns that you will probably keep shooting from time to time even if you get a pcp down the road (which if you're already filling the pistol...). At that price point it's a perfect learner/future loaner/robust gun you don't have to baby.

Deals like that, I would get the hatsan in .22, and also all the others ;)

+1. On second thought I'd get both. The Edge in .22 and the .177 Daisy 1100ws. I think actually  the Daisy is a 1101ws. The same gun with Winchester logo is a 1100ws. That's a good price.

Get the .22, definitely.  I've had .177 and .25 too but I think .22 is the ideal caliber and a good compromise, with ease of handling, good ability to take down small game, and cheaper to shoot than .25.

.177 and/or .22 for certain. .25 pellets cost more, and I've had enough bad .25 barrels from Hatsan that I would never recommend that caliber as a "first springer." Also the Striker/Edge/1000 platform is just a little anemic for .25 cal at 50 yards in my opinion (tho it can be fun to try). 20-30, good to go. The Striker is a great gun to carry in the woods, and is one of the more powerful low end guns on the market. They're cheap and easy to work on, just examine it carefully for manufacturing defects (off center or incomplete dove tails, bad barrels, etc.).

It's easier to find .22 pellets in stores than it is to find .25 cal and I don't think there's a lot of difference in knock down power from the same power plant. I have a Hatsan Edge vortex .25 cal and its accurate aiming with open sights out to 50 yards IME. I took the scope off of it since mine had barrel droop and I didn't want to deal with it. The scope is horrible anyway. I find my Edge to be noticeably more powerful than my .22 cal weirauch hw97k. That said, I've taken  squirrel with my hw97k with one shot. The Hatsan Edge Vortex has more knock down power. The .22 cal would be a good choice.  Like others have said, at that price I'd be tempted to get the .22 and .25 cal.

.22, no question. I own both and the .25 is one of the only airguns I regret buying. Ammo is almost the same price as bulk 22lr and usually isn't available locally. On the other hand most Hatsans seem to like Crosman and Benjamin .22 pellets, which are cheaper and readily available, and I have just as much fun shooting the .22 as the .25.

I feel like buying a cheap air rifle that requires you to shoot expensive pellets is like buying a beater car that only takes premium gas.

I'm weak when it comes to "bargain" air rifles and I really LIKE the Hatsan Edge series for all the reasons listed above. At the bargain prices you listed, my recommendation would be to get the Edge in 22 AND the Daisy in 177.  BOTH rifles!

That will allow YOU to experience the form, feel, and function of 2 different power plants, the pros and cons of 177 vs 22, and polymer vs wood stocks all for the price most people pay for one rifle that would probably not shoot any better.

I have the Edge in the .25 caliber and love it... However if you are wanting to
reach out to 50 yards, I would think the .22 caliber is the right choice. Plus a much wider choice in ammo is available

Great suggestions made by all.
“Primary use will be for small game and field targets.”
.22 for this. I have a few air rifles in the .25 caliber and the only ones I would use at anything over 30 yards are the PCP ones. The one break barrel in .25 I have is a Hatsan, is very accurate to 20-30 yards and a great rifle for raccoon/opossum posting, but I don’t think that’s what your looking for. Squirrel, rabbit, crow, .22 is your best bet. I still wouldn’t take it out to 50 yards with a break barrel. Clean, humane kill (for my shooting skill, anyway) would have to be closer. If a lot of plinking is to go along with hunting (squirrel, rabbit, crow sized game) I’d go with .177 which is plenty.
