Part interchangeable Bluestreak to Benjamin 342?

I just bought a Benjamin 342 made in Racine. I was excited to get one and planned to send it to Mac 1 to be steroided, but alas, it was not as eBay seller described. Wouldn't hold air for longer than a few minutes, although it had been described as working perfectly. Also said to be in original unmolested condition, but I quickly found signs of it having been " worked on" by somebody. Anyway, I have the tools and and some spare stuff from a Bluestreak rebuild i did in 2014 - I bought 2 seal kits then- and so repaired and replaced enough stuff to get the 342 holding air overnight with no apparent leakdown. ( waiting on pellets from Pyramyd Air) While I was looking at the 342 alongside the Streak and kind of comparing stuff, it looks as though the front end plug from the Streak may fit the 342. Any body ever swap that part?

if it is not in as good condition as you thought, why does that change your plans to send to Mac1? sounds like its an even better candidate for the steroid tune now. the steroid tune replaces many of the parts that are not working in your gun anyways.
i do not believe that the front plug is interchangeable between the 342 and the sheridan C.

The front plugs are not interchangeable.
I agree with Flint on the Steroid issue. Tim will fix all of that.

I DO want a steroid gun, eventually. I had planned to send my Sheridan to Mac 1 when I bought it , but it was also not as described. Burned once on Gunbroker and once on Ebay, dang it. I would like to send a nice gun to Tim ,not something that looks the worse for wear. I'll keep my two less than stellar buys and just shoot them. They are accurate and fun. I'll just keep looking for truly nice closet queen mean time. Internet buying has me a little gun shy just now, pardon the pun. A nice Racine built 392p is what I would love to have steroided.

Yeah, but to me it's cool to have an old "beater" that shoots hard & accurate. You certainly don't have to worry about scratching it up if you're in the brush hunting. Whatever you decide, enjoy those vintage pumpers.

Yeah, my policy has been that pristine guns should be left in original condition, but if a gun is a little rough but still shoots straight then it's a prime candidate for modification.

That makes sense to preserve the pristine guns. I'm much more a shooter than collector, but I do take care of my stuff. I still have my first Daisy bb gun from Christmas 1977 and it still shoots ! Anyway, thanks for info on front end plug swap. My 342 seems to really have some wear in that area, the pump arm pivot really flops side to side there. Just considering what to do with it. I could have something made at work. We manufacture over 21,000 different small metal parts there. I run furnaces but I know all the machinists.

SEND THAT 342 TO TIM!
Sounds like the rivets, pump arm linkage & spring are all wallored out.
A prime candidate for a Steroid treatment.

Budding collection. I paid too much for the Benjamin, but I wanted it and had been looking for months. I'm working on my explanation to the wife as to why I need to spend another $300 on the little pellet gun 😁

Yeah, Rick your point about the Mrs. could get a bit sticky. Actually it's around $135.00-165.00 + shipping, depending on what you want done.

Yep... I can relate.
If you paid $130-150 for the gun, then get it steroided you are right at that $300 mark... +/-
Not worth it to me.
My 342 had a bent linkage and needed a reseal. I got all new parts from Rick at Precision Pellet including brand new linkage assembly and am perfectly happy with a OEM spec 342 that performs like new.

Habanero69er I read the stuff in the link you supplied, thanks. So I see Tim at Mac 1 regards a Racine built 342 as kinda special. I know mine was dang hard to find, I basically jumped on the first one that turned up after months. The St. Louis guns are on Ebay more frequently. I was shooting in my basement before work today as it's nasty outside. 1st pellet I tried in my 342 is the JSB exact 18.3g and it is incredibly accurate. Just about every shot was touching a previous one. Less than dime size at 20 feet. Can't wait to get outside.

I've been lucky with most of my online purchases. I got a Racine 342 at an antique store a few years ago (actually handled this one before buying) and it turned out to be a dud. Bad barrel, I couldn't get it to group under 2" at 20 yards. Ended up parting it out. You just never know.

I got lucky with both of my Racine 342 internet purchases. One I got by putting out a WTB on the airgun forums. It was in Good-VG condition. Had it Steroided. The other I got off of Craigslist for a song & it is a beauty. Better than the guy described. That one I've kept stock.

My 342 does not have an o -ring on the bolt like the Sheridans. It just seems to seal against a tapered seat, using pressure from the bolt lug against the cam plate. When I shoot a little air blows back in my face. I would think it better for that air to go down the barrel. So is there a fix for that? Also I can't seem to post any pics on here?

You have to loosen the two screws of cam plate on the left side of the receiver. Then raise the bolt slightly & re-tighten the screws. When you close the bolt & fold it into the down position it should cinch down against the cam plate.
You might have to play with it a bit until you get it just right, but it's not too tough to do.
