This is an excellent idea and a perfect application for this style clamp! Thanks for posting :-)
I have many of these clamps for light woodworking applications and they usually work well.
WARNING, do NOT use this style clamp as the main driver in a diy breakbarrel spring compressor. I tried twice (yeah, shame on me!). First failure was broken plastic at the "fixed" end. Second failure was broken plastic at the "ratcheting" end. Both events launched some pretty significant projectiles. I got lucky with no injuries and no significant rifle damage (just minor scratches and dings). Only use ALL METAL bar clamps for DIY spring compressors!

Neat idea, I’d use a steel clamp though. I can’t afford a spotting scope yet, I’d hate to have to buy it twice.
