Questions About Hatsan 95

Hi.....I have a few questions i'm asking for a friend....he needs a squirrel gun for removing the squirrels in his orchard, which is on the edge of town. As of now, i'm encouraging him to purchase a Hatsan 95 Vortex QE, because he wants something on the quieter side, and also the ability to leave it cocked for a long period of time. Also, he's looking for something that is NOT hard to cock- how hard are they compared to the Hatsan Torpedo 155 ( he shot mine and had a hard tome cocking it.) What do you guys recommend?

The 95 is much easier to cock than your Torpedo and should fill the need to eliminate his squirrel problems very easily once he gets used to shooting it and sorts out what pellets it will shoot the best. I'd also recommend looking into a better scope than the Optima that will come with it.

Has your friend considered what caliber he would like to use, and what kind of ranges he expects to E using it?

Yes, sorry I forgot to mention, but he is thinking either .22 or.25, I think more .25 though. He will, for the most part, not be shooting past 20 yards. And yes, I did tell him that the Optima scopes are not all that great, and that (if the gun was purchased), he may want to consider a better scope. Also, what is the best .25 on the market for around $200? Thanks!

Why a .25 for squirrels at 20 yards? Seems like overkill, and more expensive pellets for no reason. Is he strong enough to hold a model 95 if he lacks the strength to cock your rifle?

Because I went and checked this at PA before replying, for around $200 in .25 with a gas ram, Hatsan is the only option whether it's the Model 95 or Model 87 (I have both, the 95 is .25 and the 87QE is .177) which are right around the $200 mark. With a few exceptions, everything else is at least $40 more and some are at or well over the $300 mark. Either would also be lighter weight and like I mentioned above, easier to cock than your Torpedo.
The exceptions would be either the Edge, Striker or 1000X. I have both the Edge Vortex and 1000X in .25 and both have the same fps ratings as the 95, just no Quattro trigger or Walnut stock. Both in .25 would fill the bill for short range, inside 30 yards pest problems.
Any of the above in .22 will also work very well for what he wants to shoot and I say that because before he decides, have him take a good look at pellet prices as .25 isn't cheap and because of the size, you get less in a tin than you would in .22 which with a few exceptions is also cheaper. For all 5 of my .25's, I buy all the pellets for them through PA to take advantage of the Buy 3 get the 4th free and use the GATEWAY-PYRAMYD discount code to help save a little more or it would add up in a hurry.
Hope some of the above helps.

Thanks for the replies, guys! Yah, I guess a .25 is maybe overkill, my only thought would be is that he would probably be using Predator Polymags most, which are the same price in the two calibers. Also, with all due respect, the friend I have mentioned is my grandfather...i'm sure he is strong enough to hold a 95 as he held my 155 easily... its more the cocking. Steve, I did not know about that Pyramyd Air discount, I am very glad to hear of it! Thanks for your help, guys!

No offense intended, Dale and my apologies if it seemed that way. As far as that discount code, PA gave GTA it's very own discount code awhile back, good 365 days a year and no expiration date. I think there's a sticky thread about it at the top of the Bargain Gate
Just my usual lame opinion but for the shooting your grandfather wants to do, the 95 Vortex QE in .22 should fill the bill nicely and the savings on ammo won't hurt either.

Hatsan 95 vortex in .22. Are his eyes good enough to use the open sights? Decent scope starts around $100.

I've got the 95 in 22 and it drops squirrel dead. I'm actually tuning it down to 19 FPE. I'm 73 and my eyes aren't great. I'm sure he will need the scope.

For about $62 on Amazon, you can get a Hammers 3-9x40 AO scope that's supposed to be magnum springer rated and so far has gotten pretty good reviews from other forum members.
I have one mounted on my 1000X .25 now springer that so far is working out nicely for the 25-30 yard shooting I do.

If he doesn't care that it has a synthetic stock, field supply has refurb 87 QE's in .22 for under $150.

Sounds like a PCP might be the best solution.
Easier to shoot more accurately than a springer, can be left loaded, no cocking.
You could always go over there and pump up his gun. Should be good for 20-40 shots before re pumping.
Just a thought,

I'd say the 95QE in .25 with Polymags, which is exactly what I use, and for the exact same reason.
I'll throw in another reason to use .25. It is much easier to handle for older or arthritic fingers. And yes, I also plink with Polymags.

Yes, I would agree that pcp is a good option, its just a little more money to put in for just squirrel hunting. Also, i'd love to be able to pump up "his" pcp if he went that way, but as of now, I don't have a pump or pcp, would like to get one though! Thanks for the advice!

I have the 95 and the 1000x in 22 caliber have taken squirrel with both equal.
I also find that Field Supply has better prices, lower shipping cost and the Vortex Supreme pellets shoot very well in both guns. These pellets are made by H&N.
Enjoy the hunt for the Hatsan. The three I've bough I still own and shoot very accurate once you master holding them correctly.
If you consider a PCP Amazon has the Beeman Chief in 22 caliber available for $164 with free shipping if you are a Prime Member.
I ordered one an mine is due in next Wednesday.
Don't forget though you need a HPA(High Pressure Air) air source to fill them.
Accuracy is next to none with PCP's.
