CFR Scope mount

Hello all, I have a Gamo CFR that I bought some years ago. I upgraded the trigger (CDT) and spring, and have enjoyed shooting it very much. Recently decided that the stock Gamo scope was just not good enough for the gun and decided to upgrade. Bought a Leapers 3X10 40mm AO and a UTG one piece mount. The issue is the scope rail that must have come mounted on the gun. My UTG mount will fit either directly on the receiver or the rail dovetail. My question is which way to do it? I plan on putting an IR camera and screen on the gun for night ratting. I may need the extra height for the camera set up, but is using the existing rail making a more unstable mount? Would appreciate any comments suggestions that you can give. Thanks, Chip

Take a close look at the receiver and the rail dovetail. When I tried to mount a scope directly to the receiver on my CFX (mostly the same as CFR), I felt something wasn't right--like the receiver grooves were wider. I forget if the stop pin was the same too--the rail has a place for one, but I don't remember what was on the receiver tube. I put the rail back on and mounted to that instead.
Stability hasn't been a problem. That's a one piece rail that is clamped on pretty thoroughly. The 3x9x32 (or x40, I forget...) Leapers AO scope hasn't moved in 6 or so years that I've shot that gun. Over 4500 rounds.
