The Sumatra is a real beast but can also be dialed down for plinking. Every time one shows up on the Classified here it's gone quick. It has amazing flexibility, and it also looks really nice. That they are decidedly unpicky when it comes to pellets makes them superbly useful. Wadcutters for paper, heavy-weight domes for dinner. They definitely benefit from an LDC, but their magazines are simple and IIRC, they take any pellet length with ease.

I will be very curious to see how well the new JSB 34gr shoot out a Sumara .22 at full power.
WOW! What an interesting read ... so many questions, so many details, so many different views, opinions, calibers, possibilities, variations ....I think I'll just buy a slingshot!LOL
Wow so many, it is hard to narrow it down
Here is my 2 cents...best bang for your buck? .25 cal marauder HANDS DOWNFor under 600$ you can get that thing shooting WELL better than any other proposed option, IMHO...My .25 marauder can put pellet on top of pellet from as LOW as 12 fpe, upwards of 60 FPE...12 fpe = WELL over 100 shots with only 1000 psi used18 FPE = WELL over 80 shots (10 clips) with only 1000 psi used30 fpe = WELL over 56 shots (7 clips) with only 1000 psi used40 fpe = Easily 40 shots (5 clips) with only 1200~ psi used50-53 FPE = 32 shots60 FPE = 16 shots easily obtainable, 24 if FINELY tuned...Again this is just another voice in your ear to persuade you into the wonderful world of .25 cal marauders.I can plink in my backyard all day with the 12 fpe or 18 fpe setting and the gun is EXTREMELY quiet on this setting.I can swap my ssg in under 2 minutes with any other tune and take out game as big as coyotes/fox and even hogs with 50 fpe + setting. Let me see a .22 cal do that...I could even tune this same rifle for 70 fpe (increased set point + heavier grain/43 eun jin), albeit shot count would suffer extremely, the point is .25 caliber is VERY versatile and can be used effectively even at 12-18 FPE. There are months I don't do anymore than shoot paper + small pest birds/mice @ 12-18 fpe, and times where I swap ssg's in 2 min and confidently go out hunting with 40-50+ fpe.

Sumatra carbine.Variable powerLightweight, 6lbsFalls into your price range.Shoots just about everything accurately, pellets & slugs.Fool proof, solid made, inexpensive magazines. ($12.50)You will need an LDC if you want it to be stealthy/backyard friendly.
My latest purchase is the Airmax Varmint, I really am liking this gun a lot!!! I'm not what some call a plinker or paper puncher either so shot count isn't real critical to me. First blood for my Varmint was a ground hog at 40 yards. The fit and finish on this gun is really nice, extremely accuarate with a scope and very inexpensive. Sure it is made in China but don't let that fool ya, the Snow Peak factory is producing some really nice airguns for as inexpensive as they are. My Varmint does 30fpe right out of the box with the heavier pellets. I ordered mine on the 4th of July and had it in my hands on the 9th.

Just when I think I know which way I am going a option pops up
Quote from: keithd on July 12, 2017, 01:27:36 PMJust when I think I know which way I am going a option pops upThis is the true essence and beauty of air guns, Keith, lol..With sooo many cool options, one get's to pull from one's own imagination and start creating an experience that say's 'you' all over it. We are sooo lucky to have seen prices drop so low on PCPs, with all manner of new guns hitting the market every month, way cool, no?There really isn't a 'wrong' way to go, maybe 'better' for one reason, but 'worse' for another. The constant analysis is a constant in serious airgunning, we analyze deals, options, ammo, modifications, shooting scenarios, you name it, and an airgunner is crunching the numbers, and looking for more efficiency, or something this, or something that..It is all up to you to decide! Enjoy the ride!!:-) Chickie
