Took the Compatto groundhog hunting

I have had a terrible cold for over a week which has robbed me of any interest or energy to do anything. It is taking forever to clear up, but this weekend I started to feel a little better. I figured heading out in the 90+ degree heat wasn't going to be fun but forced myself to do it to break the pattern of feeling so sick. Thing worked out well for me, not so much for these guys
Normally I take my 60 fpe .25 Marauder out on dedicated groundhog hunts but the .22 Compatto has been doing so good for me lately that I decided to take it instead. I was feeling a little under-gunned since the Compatto is 26 fpe and half of the Marauder power, but inside I know that is plenty for well placed shots.
I went to a place where the owner keeps goats, and also has a lot of old farm and construction equipment cluttering up a field. The groundhogs love it and have burrows in and around all this stuff. I've taken quite a few here the past year but there always seems to be more when I go. I settle into a nice spot, get my ranges with my rangefinder, and soon enough have an oldtimer 'hog out nibbling grass. Unfortunately the darn goats were in the same field and picked this moment to take off in a mad stampede. The ol' hog beats a hasty retreat into a barn.
I figure he knows it was those dumb goats and pose no real threat and would be back in a little bit, so I keep scanning the rest of the equipment yard and eventually see another one in a pile of old pallets. He had no idea I was watching him, and no idea what hit him when that soft JSB 15gr pellet came to a halt in his head. He dropped and flopped but was over real quick.
By now I'm thinking the ol' hog is ready to resume dinner, and I notice a tiny little spot of color through a gap in the barn. I spent a good 15 minutes looking at this blob of color with my binos, not getting any other hints at whether it is just a piece of equipment or what it was. After awhile I have become so in tune to the little spot I see that I was sure it moved a bit. Then I make out an eye, settle the crosshairs right behind it, give it a just under a mildot of drop for the 45 yards, and the Compatto put another one right on the money. It just dropped, not a wiggle or flop.
Bonus pic of some starling action - found a nice flock hitting the cow feed and they kept coming back, shot after shot.

Popped another groundhog with the sweet handling Compatto. This one around 45 yards... dropped like a rock. Shooting JSB 15gr pellets. Hawke Endurance 6-18x scope.

Sound like you picked an ideal spot. Lots of cover for the GH and probably have some agreement with the goats to cover each others back
Great shooting!

Nice shot placement on the G-hogs and great pics! Looks like a very target rich environment with Yellow Beaks too.

Thanks guys!
Went out again yesterday after a late afternoon storm passed. Unfortunately a second storm arrived right after it and I got stuck hiding under a horse trailer until it too passed. I was good until the rain started blowing sideways and got me and the gun soaked. I thought several times of making a mad dash back to my truck and calling it a busted trip, but it was a hot summer day so no big deal getting a little wet.
It went from a 30 minute torrential downpour to sunshine and beautiful again in 30 seconds, so I kept hunting. Did a complete loop of the small farm with no groundhogs sighted, but finally saw one moments after deciding it was time to leave. I dropped down in the prone on the still soaking ground, verified the distance with my range finder, checked my range card for the 65 yard distance, decided to go with 2 mildots of holdover and let it fly. The sun was behind me and reflected off the backside of pellet which let me watch it fly almost slow motion across the field, first looping high and then dropping to nail it between the ear and eye. The groundhog just flopped over and it was DRT.

Great 65yd shot! You definitely know your rifle and the holdover very well.
Have you spotted some of the G-hog burrows? What I do is walk around my property and look for any new burrows or see which of the old ones are active. You can tell a burrow is occupied by the freshly dug up dirt, or how clean the burrow entrance is. Sometimes there is a fly or 2 in front of the active burrow entrance. In the rare case that I am unsure, I place a couple of twigs or any small stick or branch on top of the burrow and if it's an active one, the sticks will be gone or set to the side the next day. Locating an active burrow enables me to establish a clear line of fire to it and watch it throughout the day until its occupant comes out, or at least know where the G-hog will be coming from and watch that area. Finding some of the burrows can help you keep your sights on them and be stationary instead of walking around the farm, unless there is a feed station where all the G-hog go to steal food.
Looking forward to your next farm trip.

Yep, the fly in front of the burrow is a sure sign
I do look for active holes. Also look for crops eaten down, or dirty spots where they rest or scramble over rocks, logs, wooden boards, etc.
