Just took delivery of new Chinese 25...boy all I can say it ain't the gun of my youth...shoots best using the peep which I'm surprised to say works pretty well with my old eyes...after little fiddling with sights, decent groups at 10 meters.....do u think it would be alright to drill peep just a touch...thanks

Phil,
I hear you.
I had a Model 25 in Baltimore (1958) while in grade school.
It went everywhere with us (we all had them).
I had that rifle until around 2005 when it finally died.
It went with me for three separate tours (39 months) to South Korea, 12 months in Viet Nam and five years in Berlin, Germany.
When Daisy started importing the Chinese guns I ordered two.
One for my Antelope hunting and prairie dog shooting partner in Kansas and one for me.
I opened the box, took one look at it and sent it back.
I did not shoot it.
Last year I found this one for sale and I scooped it up:
It still has the factory sticker on it.
Just like the one I had as a kid with a few improvements.
Shoots at 370fps.
Yes you can drill the peep larger if that will help you.
The size of the hole matters little for as you know the human eye will automatically find the center of the hole.
Williams Gunsight company makes different apertures for their target sights and I have tried them all on some air rifles. The standard opening is fine for me.
I don't shoot the 25 very much as I also have a tricked out Red Ryder:
Mostly I shoot the higher priced air rifles for hunting, silly wet and Field Target.

I enjoy using my Chinese model 25. Lots of fun for plinking. I like setting up cans on a fence and then shooting from the hip to knock 'em down.
Also enjoy it for general goofing off- mine was free with an Amazon gift card, so no worries. Only problem I see FOR THE MONEY I PAIR FOR IT (lol, since it was free!) is to get beast performance, I have to keep the barrel pretty clean.
I drilled my peep site a hair larger, but I prefer the V notch, actually. I used a dot of paint marker on the front "blade" so it stands out a little better.
