Refinishing an airgun stock

I bought an HW80 some time ago that had obviously had a 'hard life'. It had dents, scratches and bruises all over the stock. So I thought I would use it as the basis for a project to rejuvenate the wood. It has actually worked out very well indeed!!

Bleach for the old stain. Brilliant idea. Nice job on the stripping.

Thanks for the feedback guys. The bleach worked amazingly well on this stock. I am currently working on a Walther stock and it has to be said that the bleach is not having the same efficient effect that it had on the HW stock but it is still working

Hey Neil,
I hate to say it, but I don't think beach stains that well no matter what is used. The Tru-Oil finish is hard to beat.
Of course, this IJMO, but I think the one-step stain/ploy looks better.
That being said, you process is excellent
....... I always steam out the stock bruises after the finish is removed.

Neil,
Well Done!
Did you wipe it down after the steel wool? Tack cloth? White spirit on a cloth?
Everybody says to cover your checkering when staining. That the stain gets darker there than elsewhere. Did you do any special checkering prep?
Thanks,
-Y

Hello mate
Apologies for the long wait on replying.
After the wire wool stage I simply wiped it down with a slightly dampened cloth. As far as the checkering goes - I used no special preparation for it but the paint stripper and domestos follow up that I used was superb and removed all traces of varnish/ stain to leave bare checkering. I stained the checkering just the same as the rest of the gun - must have just got lucky I suppose.
