Slavia 634 .177 first groups
«
on:
March 04, 2016, 05:33:11 PM »
I recently purchased a Slavia 634 in a 177 caliber and sent it to Mike Melick to do his magic. After getting it back from Mike i just started shooting it with the open sights. These are the first groups and i am quite happy with the accuracy. I also love the smooth cocking/shooting cycle and the trigger and i got Mike to thank for that. I did not shoot the rifle before the tune so i cannot comment on how it was before it was touched by MM.
Here are the first groups. This was done at 18 yards with no to minimal wind and about 85F. I was shooting RWS Meisterkugelns and JSB Heavies, and RWS ended up shooting tighter than the JSB's, so i stuck with them and adjusted my iron sights for the RWS. I shot groups as you would read, left to right, so last group was the best one. I had to shoot one more so i shot at an imaginary point above the 5th group and tried grouping them around the first pellet hole. I am pretty happy with what i am capable of doing with the 634 and open sights. I am also sure that i am the limiting factor and not the rifle.
The rat was also shot at 18yrds and I really concentrated only on the last three shots--the head, the heart, and his rat tail.

The tool is definitely more capable than the tool-man.
I shot about 500 pellets through it, mostly RWS Meisters. JSB Heavies are less accurate at <20yds. I am not shooting at greater distances yet as i am trying to see how accurate i can get at 18yds. These groups were just shot rested off the bag at 18yds. I am capable of a little better than the best group here but this is a good example of what my groups generally look like. I am mostly putting pellets through it to break it in and get a feel for it so i am not absolutely trying on every group. I am confident that the rifle is capable of stacking 5 pellets into one ragged hole at this distance (18yds) but the shooter will have to work for it w open sights. I shot a random group with my scoped HW95 and it was one larger ragged hole.

I have a CZ 634 also. Great little gun. Mine loves RWS superdomes.Mine is all stock. Have a 4x scope on it. At 23 yards have groups in quarter inch. Found a post somewhere about the trigger. If you pull the trigger back first and then push off the safety it makes alot of difference in the shooting abillity of the gun. Yours maybe different because of the tune. Glad theres somebody else that likes them. Great gun. Enjoy it.

This rat has been eliminated yesterday. Twice i managed four pellets into a tight little group with the fifth pellet spreading it a little.

More groups. I am on my second tin, about a good third in
I shot some groups with AA's heavies i had laying around and did not like the shooting cycle with it very much. The first group i shot is the best group i shot with them. I couldn't get to group them at all at 18yds. I had shot 2 groups at 34yds and they grouped just as well as they did at 18yds, but i did not pull that target for pictures yet. I think the heavier pellets will group better at longer distances because lighter ones will be affected by the elements.
I am still confident that i can shoot 1/4" ctc groups and that i am (and lack of scope) the limiting factor as to the full accuracy potential of this rifle. There were no H&N pellets shot, i instead shot AA's so please disregards the H&N or substitute AA for it. AA's shoot higher and to the left at 18yds.
AA's heads measured 4.46-7 and RWS measured 4.50-1. The skirts measured 4.63-6 and 4.64-7 respectively, measured with a handheld digital caliper. ***And both of those groups are 7/16", i don't know what i was measuring the first time.

I am going to need to order more pellets, what shoots good in new Slavia 634's aside from RWS Mesiters? Should i be able to order specific sizes, say 4.50 or 4.51 or 4.52, what sizes shoot best through Slavia's barrels?
Does anyone know what are the head sizes of Crossman Premier Lights? I can get AA's and JSB's, allegedly, in different head sizes from pyramidair. I'd rather not have to do alot of experimentation if there is already a general consensus on what shoots best through our rifles.
Thanks.

i bought it new from budsgunshop and had it sent directly to MM. He chronied it and sent me the numbers, it shot from 733-829 depending on the pellets he had on hand. i have the exact numbers on my phone.
The rifle has no muzzle break. It comes with front and rear sights only.

Those velocities are around where my 634 is. Mine is untuned for now. Shot cycle is buzzy and the trigger is ok--not great. Wish I had the $$$ to send it to Mike. Great rifle--have shot 5 shots inside 3/4 " with Hawke 2-7x32 many times. Mine loves Benjamin Hollowpoints which is good as they are 10 bucks for a tin of 750. Congratulations on your great shooter.

I shot a few more groups on the go today. There was a fly that was bothering me silly but i never got up to get my fly swatter..
This was shot at 16yds open sighted. The top groups were shot with front rested on the bag only and rear supported by me with elbows on the table, and it was a very loose hold. As you can see it grouped like sh!t. So the next strings i shot with front rested on my palm and rear supported by me with elbows on the table. This time however i had a much tighter grip on the rifle and this is best described as pushing with my shoulder just to the point of rifle almost sliding over my palm but not sliding due to friction. Much better, but i always spread them with a flier.

First row show with JSB 8.44gr. Second row shot with 7.87gr JSBs. 18yds, front off hand on bag, elbows on table. Last two im second row are 10 shot groups of same pellets respectively.
I am waiting for my chrony to get the numbers but by sound i prefer how it shoots the lighter pellet and has noticeably different recoil pattern.

Try RWS Meisterkugeln wadcutters 8.2grs. My 631 likes them. At 25 yards the holes are touching.

My 634 shoots Meister's the best as well up to about 20yds. At 30 the JSB's group better for me. The best i can shoot is 1/4" 5 shot groups open sighted at 16yds. The last groups were 1/2" ten shot groups with open sights. The other groups were more of practicing and feeling rifle's recoils with 8.44 vs 7.87 pellets. I prefer how the lighter ones shoot and how the rifle cycles when shooting them and i could easily tell that just by shooting 50pellets each. My chrony gets here today at some time too.
I want to find a dedicated pellet for each rifle so that they can be sighted with this pellet. And i am "feeling" the rifle while breaking it in more than trying for the best i can do. I ordered some more AA, H&N, JSB pellets to test, as i have shot about 1300 pellets already. Time to clean the barrel too perhaps. The weights of pellets are between 7.8-8.4gr and head sizes are 4.50-4.52. They will be chronied and slung at paper in groups of ten because i feel it represents better how a pellet will group in my hands and Slavia setup. More pics to come, hopefully "better" shooting too.

More bad shooting at 16yds. Mainly i was throwing pellets at paper to see how they would group while chrony-ing them. 7.33 pellets shot at 775-780 and 8.44 pellets shot at 715-720 range, for 9.7-9.9 and 9.5-9.7 fpe respectively. No wonder i enjoy shooting this rifle the most lately, it is like my Czech HW30
The last 10 shot group i actually somewhat tried. I also realized how limiting the sights are on the Slavia and i am considering trying to fit my HW95 front sight and using a globe insert. It would help me center each and every shot thus improve my consistency i think.

I shoot my 631 with the gun on the bag and my off hand under the back of the stock. Loose hold.
At a fun shoot Saturday I found my B26-2 and TF99 had holes touching at 10, 20, and 30 yards with 7.87 JSB but the groups opened up at 50. Changed to 10.4 grs JSB and at 50 holes were touching or at least tight.
