Service company will come and install the new oven and haul off the old one.50 degrees and 50 mph wind gust here today. Mission accomplished, 2 smaller ovens will replace the large one. 23

German AirGun Gate / Re: Spring Cutting, Coil (heat) Compressing & Tempering?« Last post by subscriber on Today at 07:55:42 PM »Kirk,
While it is possible to alter the temper, or anneal part of a spring, it is impossible to harden part of a spring, without affecting the heat treatment of steel next the area you are trying to harden. At least, if you are using a narrow flame or short induction coil to do it. You have to raise the temperature of the steel to around 950 degrees C (depending on exact alloy) before quenching it in oil will harden it. If you use a torch to heat the end of the spring to 950 C, the steel perhaps a half an inch away will get only to 700 C. That will completely destroy the hardness of that section, no matter if you quench it or not. So, once you have a complete spring, heating only a section should only be used to soften the that area of the spring, never to harden it. If you want to harden the whole spring, heat the whole spring in a temperature controlled oven. Let it soak there for a while to be sure the heat is evenly applied. Then drop the spring into oil to quench harden it. Very soon after, the spring needs to be tempered to achieve a "spring temper". That takes around 350 to 400 C, depending on the exact alloy. You do not need to quench after tempering. It makes no difference to the steel. In fact, some tempering is done in an oven for an hour or more, then the oven is switched off to let the parts cool slowly. As Hector mentioned, the end coils make contact with the next coil over, so there is no need for that section of the spring to be hard. Just don't overdo how far you heat from the endcoil, or more of the spring will collapse the first time you load it. Worst case is you end up with two close coils instead of one at the end. You should be able to recover the desired preload with a taller spacer washer, in most cases. 26

That 2' LED strip light does a great job of lighting up the bench. I put it just behind the shooter on the ceiling so it floods the bench but it's not in the eyes and no glare.I've got a "shop light" in the garage that would probably light up my 15M back yard range....hmmm. During my shade tree mechanic days I had a cheap Wallyworld dohickey that had a bluetooth speaker and LED light and was rechargeable....sadly it broke but I bet I could find something like that on AliEx or eBay....hmm 30
