Good Evening;
I'm looking for a new gas-ram air rifle, and I need some help.
I currently shoot a Benjamin NP Trail in 22, and I'd like to stick with that caliber, because of the knockdown power it provides over the 50-60 yards of length of my back yard. The NP Trail is something that I can shoot reasonably accurately out to a little past 20 yards (I can roll a pop can consistently at that range; standing, off hand), but I'd like something that is not so hold sensitive that it allows me to continue that activity out to 50 yards.
So, here's the specifics of what I'm looking for:
.22 caliber gas-ram
Muzzle energy of greater than 20 fpe
Not hold sensitive
Capable of 1 - 1.5" groups at 50 yards
I'm going to be planting a fairly substantial garden this year (and hopefully the following several years) and I'm looking for something to extend my pest control abilities to the entire back yard, as opposed to the closest few 50-75 feet. If possible, I'd also like to stay around the $300 mark for the rifle.

Usually greater than 20FPE and not hold sensitive don't go together.
That is PCP territory.

Although a Hatsan 125 Vortex could meet your needs in .22, I'd recommend going with a .25 on account of more mass downrange. Yes it moves slower but at 50 yards it will be less affected by wind. I have the 125's little brother, a 95QE in .25, and it lays the smack down on squirrels like nobody's business.
Otherwise, I'd say skip the insanity and grab a Maximus in .22 and an EBay pump. Completely NOT hold sensitive, plenty of power, and a few more $$$ will get you a scope and pellets adequate for the job.

Sounds an aweful lot like my Hatsan 135 QE Vortex.
Which is a little hold sensitive, but IMO is better than the pure spring guns I have shot.
Mine used to be a lot more about cheekweld/eye position. But my Hammers 3x9 AO scope arrived yesterday with its one piece mount.
Installed it, spent 2 minutes working on rear focus, and AO and all of a sudden, there it was. Clarity. Sharp mildots, sharp target, all at 20 feet indoors.
Now I just need a minor adjustment on the cheekpiece which is dead simple.
Within 10 shots I was hitting 9mm brass every shot. And by shot 15 I had my confidence up enough that I was able to take out one of those 1/4 inch round head pin targets. Vaporized it!
Last, but not least. With a lot of the guns in this power range, you will see composite stocks, which is lighter weight for hunting I will admit.
But my Hatsan has an awesome piece of turkish walnut. Which for me just clinch's the deal.

The Hatsan QE Vortex would be my choice as well. A Model 95 QE Vortex is a sweet shooter, quiet, not hold sensitive , accurate, but won't quite get 20 lbs. Max 19. Less than $200

I would forget the break barrel , try to find yourself a steroid Sheridan 392 that shoots straight and put some Williams sights on it . I just bought my first and it's my new favourite rifle .
If you're *(&^ bent on a big power gas ram rifle , I'd look into a Diana 350 ntec. Or a slightly lower powered 340 ntec. Like the Hatsan rifles but they tend to be hold sensitive until tuned .

an RX2 is your ticket to power and reach out ability. get a .22 (or better yet, a .20) and you can do what you ask. just not for 300 bux... more like 600 if found used. But worth every penny. Then there are the theoben rifles... (sigh)
By the way, you could get a springer and still do what you ask. if tuned, they can be quieter, easier and more accurate to shoot than a gas ram. If you are shooting an NP you should be getting about 15 fpe... that is R9, BSA supersport, RWS 34 and all their clones' territory. As per being able to do 50 yards, a good .177 is preferable for the flatter trajectory. I am a nuisance wildlife control operator and use several springers for work out to about 50 yards... my R9 is a plague on anything out to 60 yards (.177 8.44 gr at 880 fps... silly accurate).

If you are happy with the Trail, might I suggest the Benjamin NP2 series. The Summit can be had for around $150 - $170 most of the time. Much better fit and finish than the NP series. And this leaves enough for a good scope. Mine do about 20 fpe with 40 yard groups in the 1/2" to 3/4" consistently. With the occasional 10 shot, all touching group.

Thanks, one and all for the info. I haven't bothered to replace the trigger on my NP, and I know that is part of my problem. I've been looking at the Hatsan's and the NP2 series as well. I need to find someplace to try and get my hands on them to give them a heft.

I personally have the 22Cal Benjamin Trail 1100 Magnum XL which is selling for $259.99 at AGD. It Weighs 9.7 lbs. (With out a Scope) and has a longer barrel that the Trail NP2 and it is relatively Quiet. It is listed as 3-Medium noise level. I also Have the Hatsan Vortex Edge in 25cal. 650fps with H&N FTT 19.91gr Pellets. The Hatsan is a dream to carry at 6.6 lbs. I hope this info is of some help to you sir. My Best Regards - Tom

Personally I have experienced that the shotcycle of the Hatsan's is way better compared with the Benjamin. I would go for a 125 or 135 Vortex...
But still, if your budget allows it, go for a HW90 - best "springer" out there !!!
