Sorry for the wait. Started walnut harvest, today. Just got done.

My brain is so fried I don't remember which circuits have what. Have some three in the huller, for sure. We run this awesome old beast of a stick welder, and a Miller MIG, in the shop.

I went tree squirrels hunting in Calaveras national forest. was there since 6 AM until 2 PM. did not get to shoot my air rifle at all. no tree squirrels presented. I might be at an area there people to practice shooting. I heard too many gun shots. I gave up. went home. shot paper targets at my buddy' s cattle farm. peaceful!

I am a new member, in the Bay Area Coastside. I am getting a custom .30 caliber Hatsan in January and have a Falcon .22 plinker. In 2017 I want to try to learn to hunt with the goal of turkey hunting one day with the new .30 caliber...

Welcome aboard Al.
I know it is a far piece to drive, bridges and all, but every Wednesday (most of them) we have an airgun fun day at Diablo (Bay Point off of Hwy 4 Eastbound).
You cannot shoot your .30 but your .22 is welcome.

Also, turkies don't need much to kill them, that is why The Republik of Kalifornia has allowed us to use .177.

The choice is yours.

Welcome to the best forum on the interwebz!

Short answer: Ranges. Public lands. Friends with land.

Long answer (sorry, but if we're dealing in opinion, I should explain): Dial that puppy in, and you'll have an idea of how you shoot with it, and that will determine what type of location you need.

Please don't take this the wrong way, but why did you buy a .30? I ask because the Falcon is a GREAT gun (if I'm thinking of the right gun... It's the British one, right?), and should do well for all resident small game in California, and pesting up through jacks (you could even tune it down and shoot RSs for FT!), and absolutely no problem with turkeys (I got one with a .22 Talon SS that shoots 18s at 667, so a falcon would be way past that). If you've never hunted, it would be good to cut some notches with the .22 in a variety of situations.

I had someone start hunting on my farm, and his progression is a great example: He started with a disco, going after bunnies, and now he's helping get rid of ground squirrels with a .25 FX.

I bring that up only to show that with incremental increases in experience, you'll get a feel for what you like, and you'll figure out where you can go to get in that shooting.

Thanks for the input. I've always wanted a more powerful bigger caliber air rifle and I hope to get a new place with a bit more land. I know we are limited to turkey and non game species but hypothetically if a nice hog were to walk by your land while you had your big bore in hand, hmmm....

I do like to plink and target shoot. I do want to get into hunting but more of a person whom would hunt to harvest a meal.

Remember that you're not limited: _All_ resident small game can be taken with air guns. Oddly enough, CA is one of the best States, regarding airgun hunting laws. There's work to allow big game, too, but not sure when that will happen.

Speaking of hogs vs. plinking: Is your .30 designed for slugs, or pellets?

My new rifle is a B.Walton tuned Hatsan with a custom field target stock from Woods & Waters. The rifle will be set for about 933 FPS using a JSB 44.75 grain pellet. The rifle is the B.Walton Hatson .30 cal but my stock will be totally different
The stock will look more like the Gary Canes gun stock, field target section (the top row picture second from the far right but in a laminate) You can go to the Bwalton and the garycanesgunstock sites as I am not allowed to post external links?

Right now the rifle is being shipped to Woods & Waters whom have my hand measurements and a draft design I approved; hopefully by end of January I might see the completed product?

I am more of a shoot for fun person but if I am going to hunt, I'd like to do where I eat the kill so that the kill does not go to waste. So small game, other than turkey, I assume the only other animal good to eat is rabbit? since they have not opened up wild pig yet, is that right? Although I would be open to shoot things like a rat for sport but I would assume I would need some type of night vision equipment like the British do helping farmers get rid if their rodent problems?

My Hatsan .30 cal stock is getting closer to completion. Once it is done I still need to have B. Walton complete his tune, then I can finally try it out! I suspect that might not be until end of April?

I would love to get out and shoot and met up with you folks...
