Open FT with my TX 200

I am hoping that my new TX 200 will do well for me in the upcoming matches.  It is in .22 but is under the US FT 20 FPE limit (16.45 fpe) and seems to do well with CP Box pellets.   I do NOT use straps but do use a shooting jacket from Creedmore Sports.  Anyone else shooting open springer???

I have my TX setup for 12fpe to shoot WFTF class, but will in open piston when no other WFTF shooters show up.  Just got to get through daughter's softball to make it back to our monthly shoots.

Sci Guy, are you shooting .177 I assume?  I am a bit worried about the drop of the .22 over about 35 yards, but hopefully, it will hang in there. It's funny, I sold a HW 97k because I thought it might be a bit easier to replace, but it seems to have felt more "right" than my LH TX 200 does...I'm not sure why, maybe I need a few tins through it so I can understand the mojo of this particular beast.  Another thing. MY TX is a little bit um.. twangy... is that how yours is?

your 22 at 16.5fpe will have about the same drop as my 177 at 11.6fpe.  The biggest problem with 22 is when the match director decides to use .25 kill zones at 10-15 yards    For the longer shots your 22 will work great

I got my HC one week and 650 pellets ago.  Mine is a bit twangy - rather than a "Snkt!" It sounds like a "Blaaat!"  Seriously, there is a bit more reverb and longer vibration than I expected.  Mine is a refurb, in otherwise great condition, and I may just be too concerned about things I shouldn't as I am getting adjusted to this new rifle.  Otherwise, it's a beauty.  I had some concerns with accuracy, then cleaned out some nastiness from the piston head with a q-tip, and things seem much better tonight.

Great to hear that the trajectory will be at least usable!  I guess I will have to practice a number of .25 killzones up close.   I have a few Gamo squirrels so I can use the reducers to get to close to .25 inches. 

That will take some time and experience to get good at that small a zone!

Mine was a Refurb too. It had a heck of a piston latch rod problem (see photo..)  But I received a new piston and seal (Thanks for taking care of me Pyramyd Air) and it seems so shoot fairly well right now.  I used a Straight Shooters pellet sample to find out that it was the Crosman Premier Box that seemed to work the best.   I hope your Carbine works well for you.  Keep me in the loop!

Speaking of the TX200's my .177 is a bit twangy, but I bought it used and it will soon see a full professional tune. My .22 on the other hand had to have a spring replacement after about 2 months under warranty, and then another problem with the repair sent it back again. I decided to get a professional tune and void my warranty and am very glad I did.

Several other members say Vortec or JM tune kits quiet the twang and improve overall performance but no personal experience. Just a ghetto home tune on my RWS 54

I was a little concerned with the sound of my TX HC earlier this post, but I'm over it now.  The sound of each shot still has a longer duration and vibration, but the performance and accuracy is just fine.  That is just the voice it has.  I could think about a tune, but I just couldn't bear to have this rifle be away from me for so long.  I'll consider a tune kit if my rifle goes out of commission for some reason.

I've come around to the idea of field target, too. I thought I was set on 10 meter (that was what enticed me into air rifles), with the limitations of my budget and space, but I'm reading everything I can about field target.  I need to pick up some knock down targets and practice what I can within the limits of my backyard.  I was getting comfortable and progressing with 10 meter standing.  Now I'm working out the kinks sitting on the ground at 25 yards and using mil dots, but I'm having a ball. 

We need to figure out a means to submit field target competitions on the GTA forum.

IMHO......a .22 cal pellet may be an issue with small close killzones and the loopy trajectory, however in open piston class you're allowed to scope rangefind at high power and "click on". You'll be OK once you get an accurate dope sheet made up, however the loopy trajectory make an accurate rangefind more critical. Keep in mind that shooting a piston gun is a "learned experience" as is the art of scope rangefinding.

Enjoy the learning experience and don't get too hung up on your score, just attempt to do better each time you shoot. LOL.....like I often say "if the prize money were more the score MIGHT matter".

What he said.  I only ever compete against my last score.  I just want to get a little better each time or at least not much worse
