When I break the barrel, it goes all the way down but doesn't catch. Any ideas what is broke and how to fix it? I don't have a spring compressor so I wasn't able to break it down further.

If you've played with the trigger adjustments start by backing off any changes you've made.

The trigger hasn't been adjusted, this happened after a shot. Fired it, went to cock it and it wouldn't catch. The trigger has been in it most of its life, so this wasn't a bad install job.
Thank you for the idea though, I'm stumped, so it's all appreciated.

You could try backing off the trigger adjustment by one complete turn anyhow - just to see. You might also be sure the anti beartrap linkage is moving freely and its return spring is in place. Its purpose is to prevent the trigger from being pulled when the action is open but if it is preventing the trigger from moving forward during cocking the gun will not cock. Just a thought.

Years ago, I had a Hatsan 85 that would not catch after I had shot it.
The problem turned out to be a small broken spring that connected to the main sear in the trigger group.
Without that spring working, the sear would not latch.
I replaced the broken spring and that was that.
I am not saying that this is your problem but it was my problem and that is how I fixed it.
Best Wishes - Tom

I have the same problem with my CFX. I have had it apart and can not find anything amiss. I have had it apart many times over its lifetime. The only trigger modification is the GRT. No broken spring or anything visibly wrong. Tried it with Steel spring and gas spring
I am stumped and have put it away until a eureka moment occurs. It won't.

Hugh is the true Gamo man around these parts, I'm suprised he's stumped. I myself have several thousand shots on the Gamo steel triggers, between four different guns, half of 'em GRT'd like the OP's gun, and I've never had a latching problem. Thinking on how the trigger works, I have a hard time coming up with an explanation. So, the stumped condition spreads like wildfire.

A broken spring in the trigger group could cause that problem.
I'm thinking maybe a piece of broken main-spring or a piece of broken spring guide is preventing the piston from going that LAST mm needed for the trigger group to catch&latch the piston.
That MUSHROOMED pin in the 2nd photo doesn't look right to me but should NOT be the cause of the current problem. It might make disassembly more difficult though.
edit: Hatsan trigger, but VERY similar to Gamo and Crosman style simple trigger groups.

From comparing it to my other rifle, which is stock, it looks like the part that actually catches on the piston is sitting too low to catch. It's not going all the way into where the piston "catch point" is.
Any thoughts on how to get it up in there? I tried pushing on it with a screwdriver, no luck. Is there something that broke that should be holding it up there?
And how much can I take apart on the trigger group without compressing the spring? I don't have the tools for that.

Depends on date of manufacture but I believe there is a torsion spring that is supposed to keep that sear lever (orange) tight up against the air tube. If the spring is broken you should still be able to push that sear lever up against the tube with a screwdriver. If it does not move at all then something is preventing it from moving... like a broken piece of main-spring or guide or other trigger part.
There is another torsion spring holding the secondary sear (blue) against the trigger blade.
NOTE: Some newer trigger groups have 1 coil spring BETWEEN the orange and blue sear levers. The 1 coil spring does the same job as the 2 torsion springs in the older trigger groups.
You should be able to remove/repair/reinstall the entire trigger group without needing a spring compressor.
I'd start with just removing the aftermarket trigger blade (red) and visually check for broken parts in the trigger group.
If there is a broken chunk of main spring or guide you will need a spring compressor to disassemble the rifle to remove and replace the broken parts.
Working on trigger groups for the first few times can be very frustrating when you try to reassemble them and don't remember how the parts went together. Take detailed notes and many photos during disassembly so you can get it back together working properly. I've worked on similar triggers MANY times so I can disassemble and reassemble them with ease.

This is an older Gamo, 2005 or 2004 if that helps. It's had the spring broken and replaced once before, but I had someone else do it for me because I didn't have the compressor. I didn't see anything broken under the trigger, but I will take it apart more next. I was able to push it up into place, but it wouldn't catch or stay there.

Is it possible to just replace the whole trigger group without messing with the main spring? I can see the silver part that the trigger sits on is loose in there, looks like some kind of spring isn't where it should be. Just not sure what.

Chances are you will have to disassemble the gun. A piece of debris can cause the problem. One of the GRT trigger screws could have wandered a bit. Hard to say without having eyes and hands on the problem.
Something interferring with the sear/piston latch is my guess. Debris (piece of diy piston sleeve for example) can prevent the piston from fully retracting. The debris could also block the hole in the piston the sear locks into. As I recall, can' inspect that area without disassembly.
If you are considering a replacement Gamo trigger assemblly, they are hard to come by stateside.

Well, I finally got a spring compressor and took it completely apart. The plastic piece in the back of the spring wjere the sear catches onto completely exploded.
I've got a used rifle coming to take parts off of to make this one work again.
