Here's what I use to deal with the Daisy 880 piston assembly. Cheap, easy to make, easy to use, Self Centering, No slipping, Easy to support to remove/replace the roll-pin. Works first time every time and even catches the roll-pin for you - no bouncing, rolling or having to look for it when you tap it out. Thought it might be useful for other 880 Fixers.

Basically a mini spring compressor like they use on break barrels. I forget what I did to compress the one I did, may have been the big vise, or a pipe clamp

Exactly - that's what gave me the idea. I was mostly trying to do away with the swivel on the c-clamp. I'm sure there's lots of ways of doing it. I almost bought a pipe clamp and a piece of pipe to try. Decided to see what I could come up with.

No plans except to be able to fix the ones I have mainly. I wanted a small clamp to do it easily and store it in a corner of a drawer. But I have toyed with the idea of swapping the steel spring of the 1977 with the elastomer of the 880 to see how it works after seeing pblawler's PBL mod. I don't really need more power and that will probably stay where it's at. I do have in mind a few things I'd like to try before I stick it in a drawer. How many of these "Rubber Bumpers" have you seen that needed changed. I suspect it's more of the older ones but don't know for sure and I do store all 4 that I have with the cocking lever unlatched since you suggested that. They have all been fine for years even though a few years before that I always latched them. I do think it's a good idea though and will continue doing it. I'd be fine if I never have to change one knowing that I can easily. It only cost me $3.75 and very little time to make it so I'm good with it just sitting in a drawer after I'm done playing with it. I have a lot of things that sit not being used but when I need them they sure are handy. LOL

I have had to change many, many bumpers.
When they get oil on them they soften or turn to goo.......
And, as owners tend to store with the handle latched, that increases the tendency for them to take a set and become less effective.......

Thanks Ron. If you don't mind me asking how do you tell when they need to be replaced or do you have to pull the pump assembly and check every so often? All 4 of mine are 7+ years old so maybe I need to check the other 2.. The 2 that I flat topped with jbweld I have checked a couple of times since then by just pinching them and they seem to be fine.

Assuming that the bumper is in tact, if there is any movement in the cross retaining pin in the slot, the bumper is toast......

If you remove the cross pin and the hole in the piston tang doesn't move forward in the slot, then the bumper has lost its preload.
Time to replace for optimum performance........

They are super cheap from Mother Daisy........like maybe a quarter each, so no reason not to splurge and replace if you are at that point.

That's good info Ron. Thanks. I have 2 on hand from an order I received from Daisy a couple months or so ago. I'll have to order a few more. They were a quarter each then.

You've been right a lot more than you've been wrong. I know I've learned quite a lot from you and I'm sure they're lots more on GTA that feel that way too. I do appreciate you sharing your experience and knowledge. Thanks again! I had a brother-in-law that used to say (he's passed now), "I was wrong once - I thought I was wrong BUT I was right!" I think he's the only one I've ever known that that was perfect. LOL He was quite a guy.
