A very generous and kind member, splitbeing said he had a CMP 853 just laying
around and wanted to send it to me, knowing that I would take good care of it and use it in stead
of laying around not being used.

I, not being crazy, of course said yes I would take it.

It arrived yesterday and I have spent a lot of the day checking it out.

I think this is an older model because the stock seems slimmer and the grip heel is smaller in diameter.
It feels really nice in my hands and over all not in bad condition at all.

The finish looks worn blotchy and I wonder why since this rifle is probably 35+ years old and has taught dozens if not hundreds of young people how to shoot.

It's missing the filler strips for the barrel and has quite a few dents and dings. I'm probably going to refinish it to it's natural state like I did with the other two 853s I have.

A smaller grip heel and the cheek rest part feels slimmer too.

It looks like rolled up rubber or tape spacers at the barrel band, for what reason I don't know.

I love them too.
It's a very under rated rifle that's for sure.
It's plain, simple and accurate.

The ‘blotchy’ look of your stock is known as chatoyance and is very common with birch stocks. It is an optical reflectance effect similar to curly maple. Your forearm is particularly handsome.

I took the 853 apart getting ready to sand and discovered an "Ooops".

This might be one reason it didn't seem easy to cock.

It might have happened the last time I fired it.

So, another part on the list besides the R/L Filler Strips.

The sanding is going slow, but sure.

I dremeled a clearance notch on both sides for the safety button.
This will make it easier to slip the rifle back into the stock.

With all my research before I did my first rebuild, I saw this somewhere and also decided it was a good idea.
This way it will slip into the stock easier with out having to jockey it into position so much.

I ordered the parts I need from Daisy this morning.

Here's where the finish is so far.

The pistol grip has so much body / hand oil I couldn't remove it. But, it just adds personality.

There's almost a 3D thing taking place on the fore stock. It changes as you tilt and move it around.

I am done with the finish on the gifted 853.
I'll have to figure out a name for her, but I'm sort of waiting to find out
her personality.

There seems to be an iridescent quality in the figure that changes the look when you
move the stock around some. It really shows up in person.

There's also a lot of " body oil " from handling it over the years that the pistol grip
is a richer color than the rest of the stock. It won't sand out and I'm not sure
I really wanted it to. It speaks to the history of the rifle and everyone who ever fired
it.

She's been a little trouble with O-rings so I'll have to figure that out.

I think I'll name the first one, "Eve".
She was the first woman and has sometimes been a pain in the side over the millennia, but we still love them.

The gifted rifle I'm going to call Dora which means "gift" in Greek.
