When I first started working with a "serious" airgun (22 Discovery, 3/22/17) about 2 yrs ago, I really didn't understand much about PCPs, pellets, pumps, scopes, holdover, windage hold, etc.
Now, 2 years later and thanks to attending GTA University, I've learned a little more. 🙂
I'm trying to get straight in my head about holdover and windage hold. To do this, I'm noting the shooting angle compared to the wind and my scope then marking up a picture of the target. I've always been a "visual learner" and somehow producing these pictures helps it sink in for my head.
Today's conditions:
Shoot angle NW to SE
19°F, 8 mph wind from the east
Brocock Bantam (HiLite)
177 GTO 6.8 grain, 880 fps
10" target (used $3 thrift store wok)
82 yds
A while back the wind from the west. The 8 mph hold is different. Maybe this is the "slop" of shooting a 10" target. I can't be totally sure where the hit is.
Update:
New photo 16 mph from east

Marc, this definitely is the toughest adjustment in air rifle shooting to me....but also quite fun to figure out holdover/unders. I was hunting g-squirrels at a friends house at 4500 feet of elevation and at 50yds my POI was above the crosshairs! Hit one at 62yds with about 11 degrees of decline with no holdover what so ever..hit it right between the peepers...go figure! I think wind is the hardest to judge as the wind could also push the pellet downward not just sideways...not factoring in temperature. I find it difficult as 98% of my shooting is in my yard at 20yds so even wind usually doesn’t effect my POI, so when I hunt at my friends place I really am just trying to make an uneducated guess! LOL
