Big Game Hunting w/ air

  Just wondering how many of you guy's have taken boar, deer, coyote or other medium to large game animals with a legal airgun, .40cal or up? With  proper shot placement, will the 180-200 gr. slugs@700fps from something like the 909 really cleanly take medium sized game or are they underpowered even for close up shots?  Thanks  J

If New York ever makes big game air rifle hunting legal I'd get a suitable rifle and give it a go for sure.....  but it doesn't look like that will happen anytime soon   :(

People have done it with all those critters.  The 909 from the factory (and all the Career guns) shoots 180gr @ 650fps and 200gr at 600-610fps.  They don't get 700fps with those slugs unless they are tuned.  The Dragon Slayer .50 shoots 225gr at 565fps.  So they are all about 200fpe.  They will take deer at close ranges and boar too but you have to be careful with boar and need to make a head shot in most cases.  Now you have to remember, these guns only get those velocties with the 1st shot.  The 2nd is a little slower, and 3d & 4th shots are WAY less powerful.  Most people that go after big game gets these guns power-tuned.

As far as fox and coyote, many people including some here, have taken them with .177, .22 and .25 airguns with head shots or a lucky spine shot if they are "close".  Since most Coyote shots are at long distances in open fields, the big bore airguns are usually not the choice of weapon.  A powder burner like the .223 or .243 is still used by most people that own airguns.  But if one comes in close to steal a chicken or other live stock, any airgun will do, whether it's a Magnum Springer or PCP .22 to the head or a big bore to the lung/heart area.

In the 20-40 yards range, the 909s or the Dragonslayer will make mincemeat of you quarry, if you go exclusively for the headshot ( I'm a big fan of that since it wasn't an option for it Bowhunting  ;D ;D )  than the 9mm is good for anything, the 70 roundball comes out of the SingSung 707 Ultra at 1000 fps, and that will give the recipiend a bad day  ;D
