Beginner rifle

(1/1)

Mariner:
O.K. I did a search and absolutely nothing showed up about rifle suggestions for a beginner. Which probably means I misspelled everything and confused the search engine. So let me ask all of you for some advice. I want to start shooting but am on a seriously low budget. What would be a good starter rifle that would not break the bank account, but still allow me to participate. I am not wanting to storm the trenches and win the matches straight out of the gate, I can enjoy being last as long as I have fun. I have time to learn from others and improve my skills as I go. I would like to get a pre charged rifle, and can afford a few hundred dollars, but never having done this before don't know what rifles are good and which to avoid. I may be able to acquire some cheap SCBA tanks and as I am an engineer on a tugboat, I have enough talent to pipe them up to refill a rifle. That will help some with my costs. Any and all suggestions will be appreciated.

Thanks

Karl

Karl, I'd have to go along with Jeff on this one, but give Mike (Flying Dragon Airguns) a call.  He'll set you up with the most bang for the buck and stay within your budget.

Mariner:
Holly cow the flying dragon guns look fine and the price is excellent. With that price I can afford to actually buy accessories for it. My budget is mostly self imposed, which means my wife will kill me  :o. When I get off this stupid tug boat I am going to get down to the shoot at the end of March at Invicta, and check out the sport and see what all I need to get started. Hopefully I have access to a bunch of SCBA bottles so I can rig up a refill bottle or 2, my nephew is a full time firefighter in Michigan and him and my brother own a company that provides fire and medical services to outdoor events. He e-mailed me that he has a bunch of spare bottles for their SCBA's. I can definitely see a call to Mike at flying dragon in the near future.

Thanks for the help.

I wanted to jump into this conversation and share a little about what I am learning as I progress in the hobby. If you plan to be a semi-serious shooter in FT I would go to a match (as suggested) before you buy anything. Pick up, hold and shoot as many rifles as you can. Don't worry about the price of them at this point, just shoot them. You will want a rifle that fits you well. A well fitted rifle will help you shoot well. I initially thought as you. Purchase a rifle to get myself into the hobby and buy a better (more appropriate) one down the road. My first PCP purchase was the Marauder. I have made extensive stock modifications in order to get a better fit. It shoots pretty good. It will be a great hunter. Last Friday my Air Arm S400 MPR FT showed up. I ordered the adjustable butt hook with it... This rifle is in a completely different class than the Marauder. First, it fits me like a glove since it has some adjustability. Second, it's accurate! That is not to say the Marauder isn't, but the MPR is much better. At least that has been my experience thus far. Maybe its because my Marauder isn't tuned properly etc but the MPR out shoots it right out of the box. I didn't even clean the barrel yet. There is also the issue of usable shot count. My small 4500psi bottle can fill each gun about 6 times. However I will 4 times the shots from the MPR. That's less trips to the dive shop and more shooting time. Those are just a couple things to think about. For me I planned on having more than one gun although not in 6 months. If you believe that you will only make one purchase (lol) then spend the money for the one you really want. It will save you money in the long run and make the hobby more enjoyable. I hope that helps a bit.....
