It has been two weeks since I even saw a squirrel on my property, but that's what happens in December after a year of heavy control. 2018 is ending in record territory for me (this one was number 144), though I'm not getting them half-a-dozen a week like Disco Dave has been.
Diego really pounded places north of us, but we did get about an inch of sleet that has hung around overnight. A lot of cancellations and delays, which is how I found myself looking over my backyard at 8:40 AM. We had come back from a cancelled appointment and I was getting ready to take care of the bird feeders. The birds have been really hungry lately.
Just as I opened the door, I saw this guy hopping around the far feeder. I promptly turn around for the BSA and return to the door stoop to scan for him. He had spooked and gone up a tree over the feeder, but is now coming back down. He hops on the ground again, pauses with the left side of his head exposed to me at 29 yards. I steadied a shot standing at the stoop with my shooting stick and that was that, except for a little more flipping and flopping than I usually get. And...since we still have some white stuff on the ground, he made quite a mess.
Examination found a nice hole in the left side of his head and the pellet was found behind the right shoulder since he wasn't quite broadside to me. He was 13 ounces and right on track with the averages for squirrels this time of year.
While checking the shed trap after weighing him I got a glimpse of two others which I hope to get next
They were in the neighbor's yard, so this one in the picture got a pass (I need to get an agreement with him about these kind of situations...just a 20 yard shot from in front of my own shed). He was briefly interrupted by another that happened to be under the same tree, but he must have gnawed on that nut for 15 minutes.
