other than the sight package and the Model # on the receiver, how do the 853 and 753 differ ??
(Other than wide disparity in prices....)

Early vintage 753 had Monte Carlo (vertical grip) stock with adjustable cheek piece. The medium hard rubber butt pad (marked Gamo) had a pronounced curve and was vertically adjustable in a sliding dovetail. It had a very full and wide forearm and full palm swell (for a right handed shooter). The rear sight is Gamo made and marked and is the original 5996 (?) style. The Gamo made front sight and barrel weight is also different than the later 753s.
I have several of the CMP refurb 853s with Monte Carlo stocks (versus the 853s with sporter stock) that are the same as the newer 753s. Stock profile is much simplified from the early 753. Only the stock length is adjustable via stacked spacers. Has a thinner profile fore grip in width and height.
For all practical purpose the Monte Carl stock, sight set and barrel weight are the differences between the 753 and 853. The CMP refurbs are the best bang for the buck. Add the 5996 sight set and barrel weight and you are dollars ahead of purchasing a new 753. You have dollars left to do the adjustable trigger mod, too.
Unsure about any barrel differences. It seems like I have seen that the 887 and 753 had Lothar Walter barrels.

Thanks.
the 853 is said to have a Lothar Walther barrel as well.
I have a couple CMP 853's..I agree they represent the best airgun value out there.
I just can't understand the high price of the 753W in light of the difference in sight package being the only difference......
But, I guess that's marketing.

Ah, 753 and 853 were LW and 953 were not, right? Stuff I think I used to know….
Sights, barrel weight and stock are the only differences. Seems like the last price list I saw with both 753 and 853, there was $85-$90 difference.

Short summary of the three basic x53 rifles:
753 = LW barrel, better target sights, MC wood stock
853 = LW barrel, basic target sights, straight wood stock
953 = generic barrel, fiber optic open sights, MC composite/plastic stock
Notes on each model:
753:
- The 753 sights used to be made by Gamo, then was switched to a Chinese clone.
- - The initial Chinese sights has bad QC, but I think that has been resolved.
- The Gamo sights are still available, but not from Daisy.
https://www.pyramydair.com/product/crosman-precision-sight-set-globe-front-sight-w-insert-rear-diopter?a=608
Unfortunately, at $150 it is NOT inexpensive. When I bought mine, they were $60. The cost increase is probably why Daisy switched to a Chinese made sight.
- The Gamo front sight hood will accept standard inserts. I think I used my FWB-300 inserts.
- - I do not know if the current front sight hoods will accept standard inserts.
853:
- The front sight of the 853 is attached to the muzzle weight, as a single unit, and has a lower sight line than the 753 sights. So to upgrade the 853 rear sight to a 753 sight, you also have to also replace the front sight/muzzle weight with a 753 front sight and muzzle weight.
- - The barrel OD is the same for the three x53 rifles, so a 753 or 953 muzzle weight will fit a 853.
- - Some people have used the 753 rear sight with the 853 front sight. But, I think they were at the end of the vertical adjustment range.
- There was a hybrid 853CM that had the better sights of the 753 and heavier composite stock of the 953.
- The CMP 853 are available with straight or MC stocks.
- - I think the MC stocks on the 853 was probably a non-catalog special order for the sportster shooting organizations.
- There were 853 stocks with a longer LoP. But I have no idea who made them, how to buy one, or if they are still available.
- I think the 853 came in different models; single shot only, and repeaters/single shot.
- - I think the single shot model is the same action, just without the repeater parts inside.
953:
- The muzzle weight of the 953 is the same as the 753, so it is easy to clamp on a 753 front sight.
- - I did this to my 953.
- The composite/plastic stock 953 stock is heavier than the wood 853/753 stocks.
- The 953 stock is interchangeable with the 853.
- - I ordered and put a 953 stock on my 853, to get the MC configuration and the heavier weight.
- There were reports that in HOT climate, the composite 953 stock would flex.
- The Daisy barrel on the 953 has a different rifle spin rate than the LW barrels on the 853 and 753. I "think" it is faster.
