SMF Forums are great. I love the software. But the search function can be pretty dismal.
So, a better way to search is to go to google: http://www.google.com (http://www.google.com)
Type in:
site:gatewaytoairguns.org <what you want to search for minus the brackets> such as:
site:gatewaytoairguns.org sumatra .25 carbine
Much, much better results.

thanks, valuable information, I just bookmarked this thread.
-
good info. thanks! i agree the search function here is not the best.
-
Type "https://www.google.ca/advanced_search" into regular Google search then you will be able to search specific words easier.
-
And if you would rather your searches be private give DuckDuckGo.com a shot. Same techniques works.
-
If you want a specific, exact search using the GTA search just put quotes around your topic. Such as "Sumatra .25" . This will return only those results. This also works with Google.
-
Great info. Thanks for sharing

Have done this some myself - thanks for getting the word out!

For the best easiest way to search a forum try this (Said I wasn't able to post a link, so)
Do a Google search for "Milly's Bookmarklets"
Then scroll down to the grey box "Google Site Search"
click and drag grey box to your tool bar and "walla"
-
Very good advice!

Steveoh, thank you, thank you, thank you. I've just spent a month researching two guns and I've spent hours wading through hundreds of unrelated posts to get what I want. This will save me so much grief.
You da man

There's a search engine on this site? WOW! I saw that thing up in the corner and tried it, useless...........now if I could just figure out how to post pics without jumping through a dozen hoops, going off site, etc, etc, etc........you get the picture (or not as in my case :()

I stumbled across a prime example just a few minutes ago.
keywords:
search 1: forum search for "how to reset scope"
search 2: forum search for "reset scope"
search 3: google search for "site:gatewaytoairguns.org reset scope"
quote marks not included in the search strings
results:
search 1: nuttin'
search 2: nuttin'
search 3: http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=29830.msg274330#msg274330 (http://www.gatewaytoairguns.org/GTA/index.php?topic=29830.msg274330#msg274330)
Exactly the answer I needed.

THIS IS AN EXCELLENT WAY TO SEARCH!!! THANKS STEVEOH! The search function on this forum is the worst I've seen on the internet. The Google Site Search is a big help. Thanks for the tip!
-
As a new member, this is really a helpful tip, thanks.

Google offers a search box feature for websites. Maybe GTA can incorporate it.

Stevoh,
Don't care if this is an old thread, it is still relevant today for us newbies joining the party. Thanks for posting!! It works awesomely.

I want to also support the search engine duckduckgo.com as a way to search without it being stored forever like google does.
duckduckgo clears all search history on exit of the search.

I use Duck DuckGo unless I want a map, I did not realize the use of "quote marks" would work on the GTA search feature. Google builds on searches by recording them and it helps them search faster, but, it also makes those who would love to shut down all guns including air rifles to find this site. So the use of DDG as opposed to google is better. There is another provider in europe who's name escapes me, and they are like DDG, no tracking, no cookies, no beacons.
I know I am a paranoid silly to some, but I like privacy. Do not believe the mumbo jumbo, your entire life is not on the web, coming soon perhaps, but not yet. Users of smart phones, do I need to explain you are now tracked 24X7X365 until you die or lose the phone. I turn my phone off every night and do not always turn it on, unless I am going outside. My phone and battery are at least 15 years old. I had a 75 year old man laugh and break my shoes over my phone. He proudly whipped out his Iphone and said "Sonny that is a piece of junk THIS is the newest Iphone they make, now join the current century and buy a real cellphone"
So thanks for the search feature update. I have seen the "" technique but forgot it can be used on many platforms. A librarian taught me that one! I fergit and here I relearned it.
thanks

+ 1 on the paranoid about Big Brother watching every thing we do or say with our privacy being truly a thing of the past. I basically do the same thing with my phone and have even gone into the settings and turned off the tracking feature so Apple cannot follow me around everywhere I go.
I do not own a smart TV and never will and the camera on my PC has tape over it so no spying on me with out my knowledge and the speaker in it is a remote setup so I control if the sound works or not.

Glad I found this, I will try it next time I need to search for something specific.

Thanks for the enlightenment, Obiwon.

Huh! I just saw this!!! Thanks for the heads up!!!
