Title: What's your favorite Western Show-down Scene?
Post by: Hoosier Daddy on June 12, 2021, 06:38:42 PM
What "show down" gives you goose bumps?
The true boldness, even if only Holly Wood motion pictures makes me hold my breath, and glues my eyes to the screen without a blink.
I am most fond of Audie Murphy and Randolph Scott.

But this one from El Dorado takes the cake for me.

How about the one from Tombstone where Doc Holiday says to Ringo I'm your huckleberry?

True Grit rips my heart out.

Any Eastwood movie. In " The good, bad and ugly" there is a three gun shootout.

In " The Cheyenne Social Club " a guy gets killed by a pecan.

The vision in my head when Marty Robbins sings: " el Paso".

Some really great ones have been mentioned here.  My favorite showdown since childhood has always been the final gunfight in Shane between Alan Ladd and and Jack Palance.  One of the greatest western bad guys ever.

In " the good, bad, ugly" you can see Clint Eastwood raise his cape a bit as he is putting away the ✏.  That's why there was nothing on the rock. Unknown = no name.

You have to watch the movie to really get what's into the final showdown.

Very dark and violent movie. Viewer beware. It has some history.

No doubt for me, and I love WESTERNS beyond any other film type. The ending, or the lead up to the ending of THE WILD BUNCH has to be it for me. The scene opens in a Mexican comfort house, Bill Holden rouses the troops, and the four remaining members stroll off into the final shootout, ending with several minutes of mayhem only Sam Peckinpah could orchestrate so well. Someday, if I lean how to edit video, I may use scenes from this film and put "Let The Bodies Hit The Floor" as the score, just for something to play when I can't sleep.  ;)

https://youtu.be/KMwj3NBudjo (https://youtu.be/KMwj3NBudjo)

If you've not seen the entire film, I won't spoil the ending, lets just say that poorer performance of the 7.65×53mm Mauser compared to the 30-06 is echoed here, even if only accidentally.

Second runner up is a tie.  Open Range final shootout and that amazing speech Eastwood gives as William Munny, just before he sets things right. I suppose I can't comment further (due to forum rules) as to why I think Little Bill got his just deserts, but if you knew me, you'd understand.

 https://youtu.be/KmhGYB4NdYc  (https://youtu.be/KmhGYB4NdYc)

To me, scene mood is just as critical as is the action, everything has to balance and fit the personalities involved or just does not work.  Bronson in Once Upon a Time in the West, head shaking, "You brought two too many".  John Wayne, "Fill Your Hands You Son...." in True Grit. J.B. Books disposing of the town "bullies" in The Shootist while taking his doctors advice at the same time; that was how John Wayne needed to say goodbye to his fans.

Yeah, I love westerns, and all of them have their moments. I even preferred the period weapons, that Greener that Jacob McCandles uses inside the shower against his captor, Boss uses through the wall in Open Range, and Wyatt Earp stopping the riot in the film by the same name. All display my favorite arm for close up problems.  I think a double barrel 12 ga says "LEAVE" in many different languages.

Oh oh, what did I miss?  If mine cross the line Whose Yer, pull the pin, I'll understand. I think the only rough language is Eastwood's description of Greely's Bar though???

Nothing beats the quick draw scene with Jimmy Stewart against his brother in Winchester 73. Neither of them are wearing guns due to the town rules and they both grab for pistols at the sight of each other. Walter Brennan plays the role of sheriff Wyatt Earp.

Arvo was an actor, holster maker, quickdraw artist, and a quickdraw teacher.

I'm partial to the 1hr episodes myself, especially the ones with Ken curtis,  but I will admit that the 3 parters they liked to do once in awhile do tend to be a bit much.
When you're waiting for a particular even to conclude ( it's not exactly like a movie ) it tends to feel a bit long winded at times.

Maybe theres not a lot there, but James Arness vs Arvo Ojala in the opening scene of Gunsmoke is one of the most iconic showdowns there is.

Trivia I never knew, thanks for that! Gunsmoke, those old half hour episodes, are still some of the best television ever made!

Yep, Snow Train would have been much better as a single.
The bullet was better,  but it too could have stood to be at least one hour shorter.
Kinda funny that they did 2 different 3 part episodes that were set on trains, almost like they were running out of ideas after all those years.

The O.K. Coral scene in "My Darling Clementine".(1946) Henry Fonda as Wyatt Earp, Victor Mature as Doc Holiday and Ward Bond as Morgan Earp.

I read when they made the movie they had an eye witness to the actual gunfight. He said the Earps and Holiday waited for the stage to go thru town and raise a dust cloud for cover before they moved on the coral. They show that in the movie.

Victor Mature's Doc Holiday is a bit of a drama queen. I heard he was terrified of horses.

James Aurness and his brother Peter Graves too. Matt Dillon rarely seen on a horse because he had been shot in the hip during WW2, iirc, Peter Graves was part of a group that liberated an extermination camp.

The “peach(es) scene” with Candice Bergen and Oliver Reed was so comical  ;D

Oh, Miss Bergen was so elegantly beautiful during her younger days.

^NICE^

After more than a week of searching for Audie Murphy show down scenes... this is the best I could find.
I really cant explain my infatuation.. it just is.
For some reason all else pale to him in my opinion. Maybe because I was a scrawny kid all my life.
He was a "Little Guy" with a big, humble, strong, attitude.
Good guy always wins (check 2:20 then 2:55).

I get ya, I have an all time personal favorite 'non western draw' scene too. Used to practice "EL Presidente" until we could do it in our sleep. If you really watch what Rambo does here, you see it laid out by the numbers; perfect execution. I'd wager who ever set up this scene did time with Jeff Cooper at his Gunsite Academy (not that I know anything about that).

Again not a western, in 'Justified' he faces two killers on a road. "Take one more step and I'll shoot you." He knew he could shoot that far but figured one more step or two would put them with in there ability.

Samuel Peckinpah is a good name for going "over the top" in Westerns (and other movies).  If you object to the blood, that tends to happen when people get shot.

Unless a film is intended to be a comedy, I am offended by a bar shootout where the recipient is missed multiple times, while still standing in front of an intact mirror.  Ditto with the spectators standing behind or near both combatants, as if there is no risk to them.

While not strictly a Western, I enjoyed Quigley Down Under.  There is more than just skill and determination (even if it is fake).  The principle of the matter and the crazy lady add a lot to the movie.

Sorry to report that I cannot recommend A million ways to die in the west after all.  As funny as that video extract above was, there is an overdose of rude and stupid by the time that clip rolls around.   Then, there is no more shock value left to carry the comedy.
