Title: Do you ever lose your chickens?
Post by: Lt. Dan on January 27, 2021, 09:47:07 PM
I enjoy shooting those little silhouettes but I hate trying to find them especially the chickens. Those little chickens can travel 10 - 15 yards in any direction down range. I've tried tethering them with a small cord but that created a tangled mess. This idea came to me after I woke up this morning.

This worked great, but for more visibility afterward I changed the black ones for yellow ones. These plastic strips I cut from a plastic report folder.

This made me think in a little different direction. How about a small parachute? A four line one made from a Walmart bag. Lay it out behind or to the side. Shoot it a second time on the way down. :D :D

Tried this but found it requires too much training on the part of the chicken. Also some parachutes would fail to open resulting in unwanted investigations which delayed everything.  This idea was scrubbed.

Haha! Cracked me up! I haven’t lost any, but we have had to look for them pretty hard. Almost everywhere we set them up I use a 2”x4” for the base. One of these days I’m going to tie each one to a nail and drill a hole in the wood to slide the nail into. I like your idea though, Dan. It should help a lot and you can still set them up where you want with a little more freedom than my idea.

It does help. I've been reluctant to set these critters up because they are so hard to see in the grass. This little tag helps tremendously in locating them.  I set mine on top of my spinner racks. The spinner racks are made of 1/8" thick 1" angle iron. The top angles are 4 ft off the ground and a direct hit center mass from a magnum springer will send these chickens 10, 15 even 20 yards at times. The larger silhouettes are somewhat easier to find and don't travel as far but I will eventually put these tags on all of them.

Good idea.

How about next time in Walmart go to the fishing aisle. Grab some heavy leaders and tether them to a 2x4 at your target area?

I did that but the lines would cross and tangle and it really limited my placement.  These silhouettes are fun to shoot when placed on my spinner racks. I was shooting the chickens at 20 yds and the larger ones at longer distances based in their size. With the accuracy of the Weihrauch rifles I've increased the distances even more.

It's also fun to see how far they go when hit.

Gotya....
my 2x4 is elevated so they would just hang down after shot. I could also shoot them while hanging to save a trip to the target. I once hung a the bell out of an old doorbell. That thing would give a nice 'ring' when hit.

Hilarious, Thank You. 'Tether chicken' may come up in Google search results now, thanks to this thread. Gives an activist something to do.

But, you can usually find them at Walmart for just under $5. I’ve gotten like 10 sets that way.

LOL

I really like your idea, Dan! I usually tie mine down to a nail using kite string, but eventually they would break.....and I would have to play "where's my chicken?"

Would it be wise or foolish to tie lead fishing weights to them? They wouldn't fly as far when hit. Might be easier to find.

Tether chicken...makes me think of a Larson cartoon "tether cat"...

But to the topic, I did the same, though with a larger bright yellow cord and no tag. From time to time the lead splatter or an errant shot will shred the leash, so keep an on eye out for signs of wear lest one fly the coop.

Try tying a 6 or 8 inch piece of white or yellow ribbon with about 12 inches of string to the chickens.
Same principle as your plastic strips but easier to find.
Or, you can tie surveyor's plastic ribbon right to the chickens.

Hey LT

What about drilling a 3/16-1/4" hole thru the base, dead center of mass on the critters.
The get some of those LONG legged fence 1/8" dia x 1-1/4" long staples,
drive one leg thru the hole and the other leg into a 2x4 or 2x6.

Or maybe a correct diameter nail driven thru the hole and into a wooden base,
the critter would just spin around when hit.

When hit the critters should flop over and lay down etc,
sure would reduce chasing the crafty critters all over the place............ ;)

Don I'm afraid the welds will break it they are secured directly to the base. I haven't had any break but I believe bReTt said he has.
Good idea though.

a)I tried that first Earl, the critters will tangle more easily the longer the strings.
b) I had planned on using surveyor's ribbon but I couldn't find my roll and I had the plastic report folders left over from my job at the elementary school were I worked before I retired.
Great ideas, we were thinking alone the same lines.

Lt,

How about 1/8" aircraft cable? Runs about $.30 a foot, swage blocks are 3 for a buck, no pellet is going to part that cable.

That is the reason for the 1/4" dia hole, to allow the critter to move/spin around etc,
on the 1/8" staple, not secured down solid.

I got a set coming......LOL

I'll give that a try. Occasionally I have 4"x4"x6"  and  4"x4"x12" cutoffs that I sit them on at various distances.

I have thought about mounting them on hinges, so they just fall backward when shot, arcade style.  All thoughts, no action...

I’ve had to resort to stainless fishing leader.  I was using twine but the pellet spall kept cutting it.  I don’t shoot barnyard animals so I put the Ducks and the Boars on a shelf in front of my pellet trap.  They are deposited inside the pellet trap by the shot.  The down side is they do a bit of ricocheting around in the trap and it tends to beat them up some.  I like Dan’s solution and may try a variation on it. ::)

Mark, same here.  My father had a bucket of hinges, I can't find them. I wanted to see how they would work.  I like to see just how cheap I can get by on my reactive targets so I won't be buying anything.

        UPDATE

Yesterday I shot these silhouettes with my new yellow tags attached and found that the tags were actually too long for their purpose.  I folded them over and cut them in half.  I'm still keeping the cord  4" but the shortened 2" tags are much better.

Still really easy to find and still limits the distance they travel when hit.

Hate to run over one with the lawnmower!

For me tethering with wire rope and swaged fittings would be easy and bulletproof.

On one end a stopper that just slides and one the other a loop through a 2 oz pyramid lead sinker. Homers has the stoppers for cheap.

The tiny nylon cords inside paracord is what I use. The extremely small diameter of these cords allow the small metal silhouette to sit perched on top of my 3/4" x 3/4" angle iron that makes up the frame of my spinner racks.

I like your 1/8" aircraft cable idea as being the most secure method of tethering to a frame but this method will not allow the silhouette to sit on my narrow frame.

If I was using a 2"x4" board I could cut a saw kerf to allow for the 1/8" aircraft cable and attach the cable to the board. I see how this would be the preferred method if placed the silhouettes on lumbet.

That makes sense. The cable is a bit of a brick outhouse thing anyways... if a LOT is good then more is better ;) ;) ;)

If you're going to put a leash on your chickens, why not just connect the other end of the leash to the stand instead of a tag (or whatever)?  Then the chickens will just be hanging there, waiting for you to put them upright, instead of running all over the yard picking up targets like you're a...well...never mind...

.....I wasn't going to say "chicken with your head cut off"....

the couple of posts before mine seem to indicate the same kind of thinking.

If tethered to a fixed stand the chickens are flightless.

I don't attach them to the stand because  (1) I move them around a lot. I have 4x4x16 that I place them on and scatter them at different distances.  (2) I don't want them to stay out in the weather  (3) if I go to another location to shoot with a friend they are more convenient if stored in a ammo box. (4) I shoot at the spinners directly under where I place the silhouettes on the target stand and if the were hanging down it interferes with that. Also the cords tangle more easily the longer they are.

This works for me. I'm not saying this would be good for every shooter. For instance,  those who live in close proximity to their neighbors would not want to shoot at these silhouettes.  The ricochets and deflections could reach your neighbor's property.

How about tying a streamer of brightly colored flagging tape to the targets?  The tape would be bright enough to see in the grass but light enough to allow the target to react as it normally would upon pellet impact.

HA! I even tried to order a second time after completing my first order.... BLANK!

Not sure what I think about rationing targets.....
I'm glad I'm not losing my mind.  That blew me away.  Amazon limiting rationing targets.  My local Walmart has shows they have seven sets but I try to avoid Walmart like the plague Covid virus.

I figure 4 sets will work fine, 16 hits and 4 misses. P.S. How good are the welds? I'm casting 30gr wad cutters right now....   :o

I have not had any problems with the welds but I'm only shooting .177 & .22 with the Walther Parrus .22  delivering 25 fpe as the hardest hitting.

It would not be a show stopper for me if a weld broke I'd just weld it back.

Just teasing, the DAR .22 is a LASER! the .25 with wad cutters is more of a 'point-n-pray' thing. I was super thrilled today to find that the Barracuda HE are (in .25) very accurate as well in the .25 DAR.

I've shot them with 30gr BBTs and they held up fine.

I have pounded two sets to scrap using my Hatsan 125 at 25 to 30 yards.  I got a buddy to tack weld them back together for me.  He put a thicker bead down and so far they are holding up.

My sets are welded pretty well. Some silhouettes have a slight bend, but the welds are holding firm.

I was at the local Super Walmart today, and they had 3-4 sets in the display case.
