Title: Anyone use the Tipton Gun Butler? Pros / Cons ?
Post by: Lt. Dan on April 28, 2020, 02:57:00 PM
Well I've used a make-do platform for holding my air rifles while I clean and/or work on them. It broke so instead of replacing the broken yoke that I really didn't like to start with  I decided to build a new one. Well the price of material changed my mine. I was a fan of Kenny Kormendy on myairgunreviews.com and I noticed that he used a Tipton Gun Butler.
I also noticed on a couple of other YouTube videos that some of those guys used one too.
I ordered one on Amazon and it's a little late asking but do any of you guys use on? Any tips?

I like mine. My only niggle is the cradles are not tight. If you grab one to pick it up, it comes out of the socket. But for holding the gun and little stuff while you work on it, it is great. Several compartments and chemical resistant.

Thanks Ken. I  guess you and soon to be me are the only two on the forum who uses this. Amazon is dragging their feet shipping.  It won't be here till the 5th.

Hi Dan

I read your post awhile back.

I just use my gun safe is all.   I don't display any air guns or firearms.

They are all in the gun safe.... and..... they are safe as can be.

Best Wishes - Tom

Sorry, I don't display mine either.  The Tipton Gun Butler is only used for cleaning and mounting Scopes or working on your rifle.

Pardon me Dan.  Old age I guess...the bell did not ring on that one.

For that type of thing, I use a home made gun vise.

I made it out of a Walmart rifle rest.  It mounts into my 6 in. Wilton vise that is out in the shop, on my work bench.

Just the right height and on a big work bench with good lighting.

My 3 roller tool cabinets are all right there close by, too.

Best Wishes - Tom

No problem Tom. I don't display any of my airguns or firearms.  My air rifles are stored in a storage locker, my safe is full of firearms with no extra room for my air rifles.

I don't have a shop so to speak. I share a 30' x 60' shop next door at my father's house. My son lives there now, he bought it from my father's estate and so that's where I do my woodworking and welding projects.  I have a reloading room in my house so that's where I work on my airguns.

Hey Lt Dan, I use the gun Butler, it work fine for cleaning and adjustments, it's light weight and easy to use, Handy thing to have, my Brother has 3 of them for different gun types, he's a perfectionist so he has to have things setup in each one for each gun type.

Thanks Kevin, I can kinda see where your brother is coming from.  To have different jags, patches,  brushes,  tools, etc. it would be convenient to have on for different long gun types. If I had the room and the money I might just do the same thing.

My Gun Butler came today. I see what you mean about the cradles coming out. Well, I took care of that. I made two pins out of two Bic Clic Stic ink pens. I measured and drilled through each end of the Butler and through the corresponding hole in the cradles.  I shortened the ink pens to an overall length of 2.5". I carefully drill through both with a 21/64 bit. Cradles are snug as well as the two homemade pins.

Glad to see you're Happy with it, that's a great Idea putting the locking pins (pens) in to hold the cradles, I will have to do that to mine.  ;D

You will probably want to cover the holes in the trays as well.  Small parts escape and end up hiding under the Butler.

Good idea. I noticed the holes and slots open in the main compartment.  I haven't come up with a solution for that yet. I thought about duct tape or packing tape but I may decide on something more permanent like JB weld or some type of epoxy filler.  What did you use?

I sealed the holes and slots in mine with hot glue, so far I think it is going to work well.

I thought about those hole and slots and decided I had rather have the filled rather than open to keep from losing small items. The slots were there to snap in the cradles for shipping I guess,  I didn't see a need for them in the future so I used strips of duct tape on the inside to keep the hot glue from bulging through.  I turned it upside down and applied the hot glue liberally twisting and rotating to allow the glue to level itself while it cooled.

I did each hole separately so I could better manage the flow of the glue. I have a large glue gun from Harbor Freight and it took 4 or 5 sticks of glue. When cool I pulled the duct tape off it worked great, only hangup was the residual glue from the tape on the dried glue. I used WD-40 to soften and with a WD-40 soaked rag removed all the glue residue.
I have a couple of pictures showing the outcome.
I'm happy.

Looks like a good solution. I used painters tape, ugly but it works.

I use their two-piece, pull-apart one.  It's light but nicely sturdy.  It's true that the yokes are not tight, but then again, everyone's gun is different and it's not sold as being anything but what it is.  They are secure though.  It's inexpensive and I like it a lot.
