Experiment: Detune .177 Stoeger X20S for better bench resting results

After shooting my X5 I was wondering could I detune the .177 X20S and turn it into a bench friendly springer. With stock spring it was shooting 815 fps with Baracuda match. Using only a front bag as a rest and minimal concentration on hold it posted 1" 5 shot groups at 10, 15 and 20 yards. The X20S can actually do better at those ranges, but I wanted to add in a little speed factor to the shot groups to avoid thinking about proper hold. With a modified stock spring with 3 rings removed and 50 shots fired to help set the new spring, it was posting consistent speeds of 725 fps now with the Baracudas. It did not take very many shots to appreciate the easier cocking, reduced shot action and a 3 dB drop in indoor noise. With similar firing speeds as before, groups dropped to a 5/8" to 3/4" range. Conclusion: The X20S has a pretty smooth stock firing action and can be bench rested to provide decent groups, not great groups. Reducing the spring length reduced shot action which could be felt in both your hands and cheek. Enough that bench resting could provide very good groups. I need to run more groups, especially longer distances at 30 - 50 yards to verify the results, but so far I'm really liking this 12 ft. lbs. springer. I prefer precision over speed and can really see why a PCP with no shot action can produce those excellent results many of you post.

The Chinese guns have a lot of room for improvement. You can pick up accuracy by replacing the trigger and pivot washers. You gain more by doing some smoothing inside and possibly replacing the piston seal. If you go for a spring wound from thinner wire that can smooth the shot cycle some. Adding a guide and tophat which are properly fitted helps, too.
