Title: The sheer insanity of Optics Planet
Post by: soarwitheagles on March 02, 2021, 11:14:21 PM
Hi all!

After experiencing some of the absolute worst customer service/overall general service in my life, I wanted to post my experience to help others avoid the sheer insanity of Optics Planet.

I ordered a special stock nearly two weeks ago.  On the day I placed the order, it showed as in stock and ready to ship.

Two weeks later, I find it absolutely shocking and also disgusting how Optics Planet operates.

1. Optics Planet gave an assurance that the product was in stock and ready to ship.
2. Two weeks after placing the order, Optics Planet still shows as "in progress."
3. Optics Planet repeatedly refuses to answer any phone calls whatsoever for a full two week period.
4. Optics Planet chat rarely answers repeated requests for info on orders.
5. Optics Planet has repeatedly used lies, deception, lame excuses and blame shifting rather than simply acknowledging the truth.

FYI, I placed an order on Ebay of the exact same item yesterday and it is already packed, shipped, and on the way [suppose to arrive in two days] with shipping/tracking info.

This is not the first time Optics Planet has done this.  It appears as if is becoming their MO now on a consistent basis.

I will never order from them again!

I've seen this with computer stuff and musician's gear as well, this past year.

I think what happens is that these retailers very often don't stock much of anything,  they just drop-ship from the manufacturer. Their computer shows the item in-stock at their source, but because the source hasn't updated their data, it's actually back-ordered.

I've had order come in 3-4 different packages, over many weeks, and sometimes from different locations.

It's probably due to the pandemic & world-wide shortages. Granted, retailers shouldn't pretend it's all in their own warehouse, but MANY do it, including some very well-respected ones.

Just had a bad experience myself. I cancelled an order via computer as they won’t answer the phones. Then I get a notification that it is ready to ship! I had no recourse but to use email as they won’t answer the phone or return calls. Well 3 emails later I get a tracking number. I could not stop the shipment. 6 emails sent after I received the package I get a return label. I sent it back and got a refund less the $15 shipping! 2 more emails the last being a strong one and I got the shipping refund also. No apology. Lost me as a future customer. This was my last email:

So you mean to say that I have to pay for your mistake? I cancelled my order immediately , leaving you with ample time to stop the transaction. That package sat in your shipping department for 4 days, as I tried desperately to contact you to stop the shipment. You failed to act in a timely fashion, and the package was shipped. This step in the cancellation process is totally in your control, not mine. During this whole time I tried emailing as well as placing phone calls. It is not my fault that you will not answer or return calls. This really could have been taken care of in a few minutes over the phone.
So because of your bureaucratic policy that does not bend, even when at fault, you have created a loophole for theft.
I did nothing wrong, did everything by the book, and you are basically stealing from me to fund your mistake. Bad business practice.
Just return what is rightfully and legally mine. A full refund. Do the right thing.

Cannot recommend these clowns:)

Thank you for posting this. I used to buy a lot from them three or four years ago. When I first started using them they were good but I did notice a decline in service towards the end of my dealings with them. I haven't needed too much since and I switched suppliers on the few things I bought since. Fwiw I've been using SWAF and Trenier Outdoors for gun accessories and pellets respectively. I have been really happy with them. I haven't had to return anything to Trenier yet but judging by their sales service and shipping practices I wouldn't see a problem, SWAF has excellent service and return policies. They do occasionally drop ship but I've never had a problem with them. They're spot on. I think this is common practices in internet sales but pandemic or not some companies can still do it right.
Thanks again for posting your experience. I'm sorry for your experience, but thankful that you saved me a headache. I think it's important to look out for one another.

I ordered three times from OP about three years ago without any issues.    Athlon scope, rifle cases, ATI cheek riser.    Nothing recent.

My Ebay order of the exact same item arrived today [3 days after placing the order].

I just scratched Optics Planet off my list of vendors and I highly suggest others do the same.

Same exact thing occurred last year when I attempted to purchase a Sig Sauer Romeo5...but on the Sig I waited weeks upon weeks.

I wish I had learned my lesson the first time...

Just like my experience with Best Buy.  I ordered a top shelf cell phone from them for pickup at a local store.  I was told I would get an email in a week telling me when to pick it up.  At 7 PM on the due date I received an email saying my order was canceled.  This week wait prevented my from getting the same price from another vendor.  Never again will I use them

I will never order from them again!

Since Covid, many places have serious lag.  I know for certain that many over at OP are teleworking.  I suspect that some businesses are taking advantage of the Wu-Flu scenario.

I personally order 15-20 thousand dollars/year from OP on duty related gear for my agency's need, with agency dollars, through their government agency supply.

I too have seen a big delay in getting gear from them.  It is what it is.
