Title: Help with lubricating a Benjamin 20 Cal.
Post by: Oneshotwillie on January 05, 2021, 09:12:03 PM
I am use to shooting springers but while I was in Kalispell Mt this summer a friend talked me into going to a gun show with him.  While at the show I picked up a real nice Benjamin 20 Cal at the gun show.   Now I need to know what lubrication I need to use and where I need to lubricate it.  Thanks, Alex

Really the only lube needed ........the hinges... Crosman pellgun oil...maybe a drop in the barrel.....sparingly
i would remove the bolt and just make sure it is not rusted..
Maybe a drop on the small o-ring at the front of the bolt..
Mac1 (on the internet and here) has his Secret Sauce..

Another important thing to remember on pump guns like the Sheridan and Benjamin is to store it with
one pump. This keeps the discharge valve fully seated. I always kept one gentle pump in mine after every shooting
session. A drop of PellGun oil on the pump piston seal every now and then is also a good thing.

A Crosman/Benjamin C9, or a C series Sheridan blue streak ?

I sure would love to see a picture of what you got.

To oil it, just some SAE ND 10W30 motor oil on the pump cup and a drop on the pivot points is all it should need.

That should be Non detergent 30 wt.

Thinking it's either a  a C9 or C9A since the OP refers to it as a Benjamin?

The OP can do as he/she wants as well as the others but, the drop of oil that goes on the rivet closest to the breech is enough oil for the pump cup. It will migrate to the felt.
That is the warning for not to use too much oil.

Suit yourself.

Possibly.
I have known people who thought Sheridan was just a secondary line created by Benjamin.
I even saw a YouTube video talking about how Benjamin introduced the Sheridan line and showing a C9A that their uncle supposedly got as a kid in the 50's.

Thank you to all the have replied to my thread.  It does have C9A Series stamped on the barrel along with 20 cal and what I have been able to find I am assuming that it is Benjamin Sheridan Blue Streak.  I bought it because I wanted the wooden stock, not a plastic stock.  I'll get some pics later in the day and post.

"the drop of oil that goes on the rivet closest to the breech is enough oil for the pump cup. It will migrate to the felt."  Frank in Fairfield,  I am not seeing a rivet near the breech.

“Closest” to the breech.
Under the rear sight.
The last one.

That should be Non detergent 30 wt.

That's been my go to for years.  As a matter of fact, I've been on the same bottle for years as well. It doesn't take much.

When Frank says "the rivet closest to the breach" I believe he is referring to the pin (which is one of the three pivot points on the gun that need lubing) that joins the lever link to the piston on the pump rod.  TimmyMac of Mac1 airguns recommends several drops of oil on that point, because the piston is a porous metal that soaks up the oil and slowly disperses it as you pump, keeping the gun lubed.  There is no felt on these guns like on the Crosman pumpers.

So, one or two drops on the pivot point up near the muzzle, where the pump arm (the part you hold onto) is attached at the second roll pin, one or two on the lever link rivet (the "middle" point in the pic above, where the pump arm is connected to the lever link), and maybe five or six drops where lever link connects to the pump rod piston.

The reason for more oil on that piston is, it slowly lets excess oil into the system as you pump, flushing any debris out of the gun through the valve, and out the barrel.

Re-oil whenever those parts look dry.  Do NOT use detergent oil like you use in your car.  The detergents will harm the seals.  Tim's secret sauce, or non-detergent 30 wt. motor oil, or automatic transmission fluid.  I think hydraulic fluid would work, too.  Just make sure there are not detergents.

I use Mac1's secret sauce or 30 weight non detergent oil every tin or so. Benji's don't have a felt wipe to hold oil so I put a VERY, VERY small drop of non detergent 30 wt motor oil or Mac1 Secret Sauce oil under the air plunger when the arm is fully up, I do this once every 100 shots or so. Oil in the chamber and valve is not a good idea, but a light film on the sides of the compression tube helps with compression and increases the life of the seal. ---again a very, very light film, don't overdo it, more is not better !

I also use a small drop of Liquid Wrench on the hinge points every tin or so. I use it because of the micro molecules that may help keep the gun in tip top shape for years to come.-- The Liquid Wrench thing is what I do, I don't know if anyone else uses it.

I wouldn't use the liquid wrench anywhere.  It may migrate down to and past the pump cup and cause damage to the pump cup or any seals on/in the valve.  I know you said you just use a little bit, but why take a chance?  TimmyMac recommends Secret Sauce on all pivot points.  That, or the ND 20 or 30 wt. should be good for everything.

William said he only uses "Liquid Wrench" on the pivot point of the pump linkage and Secret Sauce on the compression ... to each his own.
I use Marvel Mystery Oil on all.
Even have a 5 gallon bucket of red "Turbine Compressor Oil" from a Plant I worked at that closed and us Maintenance guys divided up the "consumables" that I will use next... Life time supply!
Also...  am thinking about using it it my Y.H. Compressor next change out. (but that is a whole 'nother topic I will get feed back on some day).   ;)

With a 5 gallon bucket full, you should buy some little plastic bottles in bulk and set yourself up in business. Might make enough to finance that Model A Sheridan! Just have to come up with a good name for it.... something with "Hoosier Daddy's" in it

Hmmmm.
Gonna work on this.
