Title: Hunting has been slow.
Post by: Nomadic Pirate on November 27, 2020, 11:23:17 PM
Well, more like my time has been taken by other things,

Summertime was very hot and pigs disappeared to higher elevations,
October came and winds went completely slack and at the same time suf started to pump,
November was the same for the first 2 weeks,
Trades have now come back lately improving hunting conditions mightily,
I was at my blind Wednesday and 2 very, very nice sows came to the feeder
Very nice dark grey full coats
I was carrying my MAX ML .25 and I could easily have taken one and posted a kill here but I decided to wait,
if you are patient enough those sows will be in heat at some point and very likely will drag a Big boar one day with them to the feeder.

To be continued....... ;D ;D

Today the same 2 sows came in and did indeed have a boar in tow,

But he wasn't what I was looking for so I just watched and took pictures.

There's a monster, black, furry boar in the area so I'm hoping those 2 Sows at some point will bring him in,

also I don't shoot hogs with curly tails or very thin coat and this boar has a curly tail so he's safe with me :)  ;D ;D

Why don't you shoot the ones with curly tails and thin coats?

Something I decided a long time ago because they remind me to much of domestics,

When I shoot one I wanted to look the most wild possible, long furry tail and the thickest coat ( here they don't really because it's always warm )

Yesterday watched the same 2 Saws bring in the same boar, actually the Boar came in first alone at 2:30 PM a full hour before the feeder goes off, then came back with the 2 saws at 4:45.

I was very tempted to take the shot because I was carrying my Winchester and I wanted to put to work all that testing :) :)

Today I was sitting in my tree blind,
Around 4:00 the two Saws came in with the same Boar in tow and then all of a sudden following was a solid, thick, squared jawed big Blonde boar,...hooo yeaahh, patience payed off !!!!!!

buy now my adrenaline started to really rush, the group approaching the feeder,

.....then about 15 yards before they get there for some reason they spook and scatter,

this group has been real skittish from day one and still is.

Eventually the 2 saws and the medium boar came back and started feeding at the feeder,......Blondie never came back :(

Ho well, we live to fight an other day :)

At least you are seeing the sows. That’s pretty cool right there. Just a matter of time before your boar shows up. Good luck! Do you hunt smaller game than the pigs?

Last nite the grey boar came in again, this time solo no sows in tow
if next time he comes back on his own again I'll take him down.

hey Manny... any of the hunting that I've done so far with an airgun, has been with a sam yang recluse with larger valves that runs a little over 200 fpe. I've also a hatsan BT65 that is stock in .30 caliber. I haven't chronographed it in a while, so I don't remember what the horsepower is, but it's under 100 fpe... maybe way under, but on my targets, when it hits, it just about, well actually has, and that might have been I cut the string too, nocked my hanging targets off the string... lucky more like it, but I've considered it for hunting and others tell me no problems... yet some are also saying no way, unethical, etc etc etc... but I'm of two thoughts here. One, even if say 75 pounds fpe or slightly less, a 30 caliber puts out a lot of energy.  I know we're trying to get airguns legal here for hunting and airguns of arizona suggested, according to DLNR, 400 fpe, but when I talked to Kip Perow, who sat with DLNR on this, if I remember, he told me he'd recommend 200 fpe as being an adequate minimum. We're still working on this and we want to go back this year to set this up for the next year legislature on airgun power for public hunting. What would you suggest as an adequate minimum?

That is such a tricky question to answer,

the problem with the establishing of a minimum power is that only really relates to the Heart/Lung shot,
for the Brain shot you don't need anywhere near the same power, or caliber for that matter.

So if we are strictly talking of hunting with body shots I would say a good ballpark would be 300 FPE and .357 caliber minimum even if I know for a fact that much less is still very effective.

Went to my bling today with the intention of shooting the grey boar if he showed up alone,

He did, I watched him eat for 40 minutes and just couldn't take a shot at him,

towards the end 2 more pigs came in but they looked real spooked like if it was the first time they enter the area, they where there and away in a flash.

Why couldn't you take a shot at him Manny? Or maybe it was you couldn't Get a shot, like due to obstructions, etc.?

I say live to hunt, it’s not always about the kill.
If you take a big game animal the work begins to pack it out of where you are in the remote areas that you may be hunting in. Safeway is still open.

A lot of noobs never consider this when they think about taking up hunting large game. The further you get from the roads and the more harsh the terrain, the more difficult it'll be to haul that animal's carcass out from where you shot it. Field dressing helps, but if its a particularly large animal unless you are willing to sacrifice and lose a lot of meat you're in for a good workout.
I shot an adult capybara some months back, roughly 5 km into a swamp. I estimate he could have been about 150lbs live weight. After dressing I had to haul that sucker out, and it was anything but easy. I had to make 2 trips. When I got home and weighed him, there was just under 90 pounds of meat on the scale. Ain't no way on this planet eas I I going to try to haul that much load over that long a distance, with swamp mud grabbing ahold of my boots every single step of the way.

Manny, you'll have your chance at that square jawed boar soon enough. You've got the patience, your time will come.

Told myself a few weeks back that next time I see the medium boar I would take it down, however that has not been the case even yesterday first the boar came in twice before feeding time and then the 2 Saws came after the corn was on the ground.

Gotta remind myself to shoot the first time I see a porker, if I watch it to many times I kinda get familiar with it and find it hard to shoot.

The kill isn't everything.  As a matter of fact, once you have full confidence that you can make the shot, that hunt can be over in your mind.  I guided elk years ago in Colorado. My favorite client purposely shot over a world-class bull after a long hunt.  His Daughter had gifted him the trip because he loved hunting, but he was dying himself of a long-term illness.
The shot was 60 yds standing broadside, with a .300 mag that he had shot over 30 years. He passed on the kill.  Then stated that it was the most successful hunt of his life. There was a tear running down his face, just as the one on my face now...

Hey Manny here in California free roaming feral hogs do thousands of dollars of damage to crops and habitat that both farmers and native wildlife depend for their liivelyhood and existence, curly tailed hogs get killed. No ill intent ment but it's what I have to do to keep them in business.    Mike

She is a lucky woman; not many men left nowadays who drop their hobbies to be with the one they care for.  :D
Major kudos; and keep the lady on the top of the list; if she's the one... the piggies can wait, they're only getting bigger after all
